The bad - and there's a bunch of it.
-You can't live stream and record in 4k. The most you can do is 1080p. To me, this is a total waste - why would I live stream with a high end camera like this, and skip the most important function of the camera. Some product manager needs a kick in the nuts.
-Battery life is pathetic. Get a very large external battery pack if you're going to record in 4k 60. Seriously, unless you take 2 minute videos, it will die before you capture anything.
-You can cook eggs on this thing when you're recording. If it's even remotely warm outside, it will shut down occasionally, from what I can only assume is overheating.
-There's no preview available while recording in 4k 60. My Hero 5 Blacks have it, why not this new one? Seems like a giant oversight.
-I had to go to youtube to find out how to set up streaming for something other than Facebook. Seriously GoPro - your documentation, both on-line and included with the camera, sucks.
-The whole streaming process is really funky. I keep having to delete the camera from the GoPro app in my phone and re-connect it whenever something needs to be changed.
Long story short, I'll use it for recording the same content I did with my Hero Black 5's, but won't be using the streaming features - which was the only reason I even though about upgrading. I wish GoPro had documented or at least given specifics on the new features. I have a feeling they purposefully held that information back because they knew it would piss people off and no one would pay to upgrade.
Now, with low light improvements and the fact that it shoots "flat" it's honestly a huge benefit to my work! What I mean by shooting flat, is that the video sequences lack the high contrast I've gotten with the GoPro Hero 5 Black edition and that's a GOOD THING! They dynamic range is inproved, less clipping in highlights and more information in the shadows, you can up the contrast in post production and get the look you want. But that's not what I needed this for.
I'm a single shooter, meaning that I work alone, even when covering weddings. I have always done mixed media with my Nikon DSLR bodies which meant that I would shift back and forth from stills to video sequences. Now I'm not even going to pretend that the GPH6B is competing with the capabilities of pro-body DSLR cameras, BUT, I can use both at the same time. A recent client asked if I could take stills of things like ring exchanges, the first kiss, bouquet toss etc... AND, include short video grabs of those critical moments? Well, actually, yes, now I can do just that.
During wedding ceremonies, I don't use a strobe on top of my camera, I don't want to disturb the sacred moments, nor make myself part of the "action" up at the altar. The solution is that I can put the GoPro Hero6 ON my Nikon hot-shoe, I set the field of view etc to 1080p Narrow 30 fps.
Wherever my camera is pointing to take those special photos, the GoPro is videoing and with the field of view set to narrow, you don't see your 70-200 zoom lens, even with the shade/hood in place.
I remain a one-person-show and don't make myself into a spectacle at weddings or performances, AND get both video and stills without switching back and forth from one camera to another. GoPro HERO6 Black is finally for truly Professional workflows. I'm so glad to have it!
I did read several reviews before purchasing the Hero6 and noticed many complaints regarding the camera stalling, shutting down, not recording, re-starting etc... Those issues are almost always due to the wrong capacity Micro SD Card. The problem is that they often sell this camera in a bundle that includes a Micro SD Card that does NOT meet the minimum performance requirements of the Hero6
When you go to the GoPro site, there is only ONE RECOMMENDED CARD LINE and here it is: SanDisk Extreme/Extreme Plus/Extreme Pro UHS Video Speed Class 30 (V30) - ≥32GB
I personally wouldn't use any card that is not marked "Extreme Pro" by SanDisk. and I recommend that you don't get a card smaller than 64gb. In 4k, a 32 gig card will get used up in a blink depending on your selected frame rate.
Your read/write speeds will save data recording problems from happening. AND, in post-production, you will offload your video data much quicker and time = money. If you don't use the endorsed cards, don't complain, it's the operator, not the gear.
I would definitely recommend this camera to enthusiasts and pros that need to add to their image making arsenal. FIVE STARS to say the least.

The stabilization in the TimeWarp (hyper lapse video) mode is not quite as good as in the HyperSmooth mode but works well. When I used TimeWarp while mountain biking it was watchable but a little rough. When I used it while on a road bike with was very smooth.
The SuperPhoto HDR setting in photo mode also works shockingly well. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the images it produces in the linear FOV with SuperPhoto turned on.
I haven’t had any of the connection and setup issues that others have noted. I have a Google Pixel 2 and was able to download the GoPro app, turn on the Camera, install updates, and have it up and running with no problems at all. I know it varies by iOS vs Android and what phone you are using, but if you have a Pixel 2, you shouldn’t have any issues. Hopefully. I didn’t anyway. Cross your fingers.
My only negative thing to say so far is the battery life is not great. You may as well go ahead and buy at least one more battery and the multi-battery charger. Turning off wireless connections while filming definitely helped with battery life but on the other hand it is also really nice to use your phone to control it with using it.
All in all I really like it. I haven’t had a GoPro since they didn’t have touch screens. This is the first one with enough features to entice me back into the GoPro world. This one is easy to use. It produces good footage. It’s waterproof and rugged. I can use it as an action camera and as a small point and shoot travel camera. That is basically what I’ve been hoping a GoPro could be at some point and I feel like this one actually delivers on that.

The first point that I want to make, is how stingy GoPro are with the attachments that come with the camera. Inside the box I found, the camera, a battery, a frame with a mounting clip attached, two self-adhesive mounts (one straight and one curved), a USB to USB C cable and a completely useless set of instructions. I would have expected way more than that, had I not known beforehand what was included. The instructions are basically a set of diagrams showing how to fit the camera inside the frame, where to place the battery/micro SD card, where to place the charging/data cable, the power and shutter button locations and how to mount the camera onto a helmet. I will include a photo of them.
I charged the battery, turned the GoPro on and then began to follow the set up instructions displayed the touch screen. This started well and then went horribly wrong. I tried to follow each prompt, I don’t know whether it was just me being daft or a problem with the program, but I managed to get myself in a real muddle. It ended up with the camera asking to connect to my phone with the GoPro app. I did this and after that things settled down a bit. Connecting to the app was very easy and the first thing it did was update the camera software, which was also very easy. After a little experimentation I figured out how to operate the camera and once I had done that it was very easy. I think GoPro need to look at the set up process. I would like to think that I am pretty good with these types of devices.
The camera is an absolute joy to use once you figure it out and there are some very cool features. Voice commands allow you to record, stop recording , turn the camera on, turn the camera off, and lots of other functions and these work right from the start. I have had several instances when the camera has switched on whilst I have been talking or listening to the TV though.
So what about the video – well it is very good. I have only used 4K, but it is impressive. This camera has video stabilisation too and it is the best that I have seen, almost as good as mounting it on a gimbal. It will only work up to 4K 30fps though and you lose 10% of the wide angle picture. Stabilisation is not available at 4K 60fps. The colours are lovely and vibrant; the video is sharp and very pleasing to the eye.
This camera is waterproof; you can take it into the water without a waterproof case. This is only an advantage if you are into water sports or wish to use the camera in the pouring rain. The down side of this is that the microphones also need to be waterproofed and this has resulted in a huge loss of clarity on the sound. Just like placing the older cameras into waterproof cases did. In all fairness it is not as bad as that, but there is a significant drop in sound quality because of this. You can get an external microphone adapter, but as with all of GoPro products, this is expensive and third party products are not available.
So I love the video produced by the GoPro Hero 6, but it is let down by the microphones. I think it is overpriced and does not come with enough equipment. However, there is no doubt that this is the camera that all the other cameras are judged against and that is for a good reason. If you want the best, you will just have to grit your teeth and get over the price and lack of gear. It is a GoPro after all!
