Firstly the HyperSmooth setting is genuinely impressive. Even going down rough, rocky trails on a mountain the footage is shockingly smooth. I used the chest mount which worked very well. I did have a video sample on this review but it looked awful once uploaded. I guess it was whatever processing Amazon does to videos you upload as I uploaded the video to Youtube and Vimeo with no problems.
The stabilization in the TimeWarp (hyper lapse video) mode is not quite as good as in the HyperSmooth mode but works well. When I used TimeWarp while mountain biking it was watchable but a little rough. When I used it while on a road bike with was very smooth.
The SuperPhoto HDR setting in photo mode also works shockingly well. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the images it produces in the linear FOV with SuperPhoto turned on.
I haven’t had any of the connection and setup issues that others have noted. I have a Google Pixel 2 and was able to download the GoPro app, turn on the Camera, install updates, and have it up and running with no problems at all. I know it varies by iOS vs Android and what phone you are using, but if you have a Pixel 2, you shouldn’t have any issues. Hopefully. I didn’t anyway. Cross your fingers.
My only negative thing to say so far is the battery life is not great. You may as well go ahead and buy at least one more battery and the multi-battery charger. Turning off wireless connections while filming definitely helped with battery life but on the other hand it is also really nice to use your phone to control it with using it.
All in all I really like it. I haven’t had a GoPro since they didn’t have touch screens. This is the first one with enough features to entice me back into the GoPro world. This one is easy to use. It produces good footage. It’s waterproof and rugged. I can use it as an action camera and as a small point and shoot travel camera. That is basically what I’ve been hoping a GoPro could be at some point and I feel like this one actually delivers on that.

Definitely not waterproof.
I was skeptical about this unit being waterproof after looking at the design. I have a Hero 3 plus and a knockoff and both use a separate case. I have never had an issue. I use these when diving so I am familiar with the GoPro and other brands used underwater. I purchased the extra waterproof case for diving for this unit also. I wanted to test this out without the extra case in 2 feet of ocean water. After it being submerged for less than 3 minutes it flooded. All seals look perfect and intact. I am not sure what area leaked as they all looked sealed tight. It should have easily tolerated 2 feet of water. I am only bothering to write this to warn people. After this happened I did a Google search and this seems like a rare issue. My only real concern was calling GoPro and them telling me the warranty doesn't cover "water damage". They are swapping the unit but called it "a one-time courtesy. Out of X number sold they can't tell me 100% will not have a bad seal. So if it happens only 1x out of 10 million that one guy gets screwed? Super low percentage but if you're the guy how are you feeling? The same week I purchased a dash mount and it broke first use. EIther I am very rough on their products or their quality is slipping. I am not rough on my other cameras so I think it's the latter.

The image stabilization is unbelievable for something this small and tough. You cannot get better without a gimbal.
It shoots insanely wide in superview and looks great as well. You can also set it up for wide and narrow shots as well. Narrow works great for close up and vlogging.
The time warp option is also incredible. Shoot timewarp at 30x and be blown away by how stable the video comes out. You can strap this to your chest and run full out and the video will come out smooth in timewarp at 30x. This feature lets you get very creative and make a lot of great shots.
The only downside is the battery life. The battery life isn’t bad by any means but we always want more! If you think about what this camera is doing, the battery life is good. I can get about a half day of using it quite a bit before I need to charge it. Bring a small power bank with you and you can keep using this unit while charging!
I went from using the original GoPro hero to this and i cannot even believe the difference. Nothing but excellent things to say about this camera.
