I put it on a bicycle over rough terrain and the camera smooths the bumps out very well. Move the camera by hand on a pole and it makes the footage feel like it's on a drone. There are many videos online to show the differences I ended up watching, and the reason I went with the 8 was that the 9 didn't seem to have a significant increase in video quality.
one downside to this GoPro is the battery life isn't that great. I also encountered times when the GoPro just shuts off and I have to remove and reseat the battery just to turn it on again which was annoying if you are in the water. Also, the screen lock can be annoying to unlock the settings when the camera is wet. Finally, when recording amphibious content you need to check if there's a water droplet on the lens causing blurriness and clean it in case you are unlucky with where the droplet ends up blocking the lens. You are also pretty much stuck with a wide angle type of view of everything and a fixed aperture that just puts everything into focus.
Underwater footage is excellent, worked great snorkeling and in pools without the need for a third party case. No fogging issues and the battery/memory card compartment stayed bone dry after hours of submerging and splashing around. The audio recording quality when using it in water is okay, sometimes you get that water in ear sort of sound so it's not reliable for audio when wet. Though even when dry, the audio recording quality is a bit subpar with a high "treble" sound to it.
If you are shopping for accessories, when swimming the chest cam shows the floor which was pretty boring, so I recommend a snorkel that has the attachment near the mouth piece, or using a head band attachment.
Though if you are using your hands for something like fishing or rowing, then the chest attachment is cool because it shows your hands.
The other things I learned is using a selfie stick works great, and if you film a sunset using time lapse you can connect a backup battery bank or AC adapter to provide power for long durations.
I felt like the default GoPro batteries only last an hour, and less if you do different features and have a lot of starts and stops. One of my best purchases was the dual external charger because of how fast this was eating through batteries.
Also take note that HVEC format that results from slow motion recording is a tad more difficult to work with unless you have the right software. and codec to view/edit.
The memory cards that come in bundles (Sandisk Extreme) work fine with all recording formats of the GoPro so no issues there.
My final lessons learned is my friend's GoPro was attached to a surf board with adhesive, and although 3M VHB boasts of a permanent outdoor bond, there must have been wax on the board because he lost his go pro to Davey Jones Locker after like 15 minutes of surfing. I became super paranoid to lose mine and I like to use those safety straps.
In summary, I'm a fan of GoPro, but I have that feeling that maybe my problems with this model would have been solved if I had just bought the newest model. I may be a fan, but after using it I didn't exactly have the urge to go and buy GoPro shares if you know what I mean.
I did an unboxing of this bundle as well as two other accessories that I bought separate on my Youtube channel. Just search for "GoPro Hero 8 Black Unboxing (Amazon Bundle)" on Youtube or search for my channel, "Jollyroger Hobbies"
You get every thing that is pictured. I want to clarify one thing though, You get 3 total batteries with this bundle! The Two that are pictured and another one that is in the Hero8 box. That is 3 total GENUINE Hero 8 Black batteries and YES, they all three have the blue strip at the bottom.
The hero 8 is a wonderful little action camera. Now I am not new to cameras or videos as I am an amateur photographer. I am however new to Gopro's and this is my first. It is very easy to navigate and pick settings and the results are simply amazing! I think I will be putting away my DSLR for videos unless i will need a zoom lens.
I got an couple awesome timewarp videos from me driving my 18-wheeler. Wass so neat to see it. Things I could never do with a bulky DSLR. The stabilization on this camera is simply amazing and is a total game changer. There no need for a gimble!
The battery life on these cameras suck and from what I understand, that is nothing new. I guess there is a price to pay when you make a camera so small. One battery will last you about one hour unless you are using high performance settings, then you will get less battery life. It is a very good thing that there are 3 batteries in this bundle as you will need them. Do yourself a favor, get an external charger so you can charge the batteries out of the gopro.
The included media card reader worked fine for me on my Windows 10 system, though I do not need one as I have a built in one but I tested this nonetheless.
For anyone wanting to record awesome videos, fast action, super slow-mo or just want a rugged waterproof camera to play with, this is your gem! I highly recommend it!
I like menus. I have also connected it to my iPad for controlling the camera. The menus, the settings, and the sound set up on this camera make it very good for recording my YouTube videos. I was looking at more expensive mirrorless DSLR cameras but I'm on a budget and this camera fit my budget.
The Camera is Durable I did put on some 3rd party tempered glass protectors to keep it safe. And make it easier to clean the lens without scratching it. I'm using the camera with the included memory card and the batteries. But I did buy the dual battery charger and a few other accessories from GoPro including GoPro plus service.
As far as my setting for recording I'm using 1080P/60Fps Linear, Flat color profile, medium sharpness, high bit rate, stereo mic or external, hyper smooth setting is about the medium setting, white balance auto, ISO min 150, ISO max 1600, auto shutter. So far these work great for my YouTube videos.
This set was a perfect start for me and I added more to it after I bought it.
