Voice activation works like a charm. Worth the monies if distance recording is a part of your regular schedule.
Both the button and voice activation work when the controller is used within 33 feet of the camera. The signal does need a direct line of sight -- meaning that you can’t start a recording while the camera is in an entirely different room, for example.
WORST GOPRO Product EVER ! my truly advice is to STAY AWAY ! this is like a match, you could only use it once, ! and let me explain me better... it seems like a common problem, that if the REMO lose entirely the charge it will never charge again, so it's a time bomb was to be realistic, who want's a product that as soon as loses the charge it become a brick ?
Have been a customer of GoPro for 5 years since original Hero version 1. I have spent over $5000 on gopro over these years. The quality QC/QA of new shipping products has gone down to dumpster since GoPro version 3. Till about 2015 and Hero3 things were OK. since then the Hero5 (heating up, battery charging, defective units) and its accesseries have been horrible to put it mildly (have a worse word).
Bought brand new Hero5 8/10/2017 and voice activated waterproof Remote called "Remo". The Remo waa dead on arrival (DOA) and would not charge no matter what wall charger/5V/2.4amp was used. When plugged in, the charger indicator light would blink red and go off. In some cases would blink for 10 seconds and go off. Left on charger never charged. Pressing power 1-3 seconds or 8 seconds did nothing. Tried USB in Lennova laptop, Macbook pro, wall iphone original charger, ipadpro original charger, RAVpower wall charger, Ravpower Brick, Photive 6 USB charger, Samsung S5,S6,S7 charger and over 15 other devices (making sure the USB output is 5V/2.4Amp or above). No luck.
In the past, have had GoPro remote charging issues with Hero3 smart remote. One DOA and other had contact issues on charging port and cable. So I thought this was a similar random QA issue. But when I searched solution in GoPro and google- found many people having the same issue on brand new "Remo" units out of the box and having to return unit. Wondering if the same units are recycled!? Or a bunch of production run issues caused a lot of DOA "Remo" units. I am 100% sure that their support/help desk and internal product teams know the real issues- at the least they should know it by now as the product is in the market for over 11 months since Sept'2016.
This is certainly a charging or manufacturing battery defect as the unit would light up the charging light, blink a few times and would not charge. When researching found many people had similar issues on units sold at $64 (not$79) from amazon BY GOPRO. So I returned the unit, to Amazon and bought another brand new unit on same SKU/order item on 8/13/17. Two days later that unit arrived - to my amazement it arrived DOA. same problem- it won't charge.
This time around, I was very upset as we were leaving for vacation 8/25/17 and we wanted to take the. Ew Gopro H5 with this remote.
Finally I called the tech support the wait on Monday 8/13/17 was 2 hrs hung up and called next day, it was 3 hrs. Finally on Wednesday 8/16/17 after 50 minutes on hold got support on and after spending 20 minutes troubleshooting swapping cables, chargers etc they said it is a defective unit. Wanted original box pictures, serial number, sales reciopt etc. thought they will send me a new one and I can RMA the same dead weight broken one back to them ASAP. But to my amazement, I was told to ship the "REMO" unit -ONLY then they will ship me a replacement- NOT even guarantee it would be new out of the box.. they will only ship the remote ONLY after they receive the DOA unit . Remember this was dead out of the box when bought new. since we were heading for vacation 8/25/17 -this process was not going to reach me in time. I asked that they send me the RMA label and parellel ship replacement at same time - This way while I send the DOA unit my new one can come in on time. I was told NO WAY. They said it is the policy to get broken hardware first before they ship warrantee item. This is totally ridiculous. Why is a dead brand new product out of the box my fault!? Not even charged once and less than a day old!?? I understand if the product was used/ even a week or month and died at no fault, BUT a brand new OutOfBox unit not working !!!
Is it my fault Gopro shipped defective new units or sent broken remanufactured units as new !?? Not one but two in a row!??? I was willing to provide my credit card for gurantee to receive a new working unit faster and GoPro can charge me the unit cost if they dont receive my RMA unit (totally useless table weight) back.l..
BUT I was told no way.... they cannot trust me till they receive the non-working unit. I asked what good is the non working unit, if they dont remanufacture or repair - certainly it is. Onuse for me.....
The customer service agent was low in the totem pole and was nice but her hands were tide with Stupid GoPro support/warranty and CS policies. No wonder their stock went from $80 to $8 a 1000% loss and further beaten by competitors who care for their customers. GoPro forgot who is responsible for their brand/market and ben loyal to brand and who pays their pay check!.
The senior management including GoPro VP of QA and Customer Service and their CEO has to read this post and learn....If you are a Gopro employee reading this review, please copy paste the link and send to your All if your senior management. They could easily check from my record that I have bought several 5 generation of GoPro's and add on accessories mounts, batteries, attachment, screen packs and remote controls. What kind of company don't trust their loyal Net Promoter 10 NPS customer? This story is a clear case study of how NOT to treat your brand ambassador customers and how to kill your own brand by providing poor customer service policies. If empowered right, the CS agent could have easily override and sent me a new unit while I ship the old one back to them (in parallel). They could have (quick/chat/queue - no wait) process (if your unit is new and does not work out of the box) made my life easier and ensured I get a new working unit they could have easily converted this issue to WIN me over.
On the other hand I was so happy that I bought the unit fro Amazon and not directly from GoPro. I have to give Amazon customer service 11 out of 10 (above 5 star) as it took 5 minutes to get RMA ups label and send back for credit as DOA! I hope Amazon senior management read this and give kudos to their customer service and systems and policies. This is the reason I buy everything (other than fresh vegetables - EVERYTHING else) from Amazon and give them a NPS of 11 on 10 scale. Kudos to Jeff Bezos and his leadership team!
Sadly I had to return the seccond DOA unit again back to Amazon....ordered a new SmartRemote and a third "Remo" unit from them again. Even if this 3rd "Remo" works, I am not sure for how long as many reported major product failure issues (even rumors that the "Remo" unit will be discontinued). This ordeal, and they way GoPro treated me - left me with anger, frustration, and a lot of stress to put it mildly.
Going to buy another competitor Remote for my GP5 and check out the competitor YI 4k+ product from now on... sad to see GoPro company and its products becoming GoDump/GoDead or a NoGo for me as its products and service GoDown the dumpster!!!!
I know there is also the button but I believe it would be more difficult to change modes on the Hero 5. I'll have to read more of the manual and maybe look up some YouTube videos.
