Garbage. It takes days, yes days, to recharge with the solar panels. I tested it once. The output was great. However, the input was so ridiculous. It took DAYS for the stupid thing to recharge. It uses up power far faster than it could ever recharge under ideal conditions. I've read reviews stating that we need to be realistic because of x, y and z, doing calculations, etc, etc, etc. Look, the way I see it is if you spend almost $800 on a kit that is supposed to be a "plug-and-go" unit, I'd better get a plug-and-go unit that is USEFUL. My point is, the company falsely advertises its product. The exorbitant price is mostly paying for marketing. I feel like a fool for having bought this, and I made the bigger mistake to have bought the large unit with 2 suitcase panels. Yes, I got suckered into the advertising. I should have done more research, or at least tested the small unit first. However, never, ever expect it to recharge for days. Please do not buy this. It is a scam.

I took the Goal Zero Yeti 400 on a trekking trip in the Himayalas of Nepal. I was attracted to the lightish weight and the ability to charge from solar panels, and it seemed like a great option for keeping cell phones, cameras, and laptops charged while very much off the grid.

The Goal Zero Yeti 400 worked for about a month with maybe 5-6 laptop charges over that time and some cameras and cell phones. Afterwards, it would no longer charge from the solar panels. During that month, it overheated and shut down several times when charging laptops. It was absolutely more trouble than it was worth.

Lasted one year, battery no longer holds a charge. Contacted customer service who suggested i reset the battery. Did not help. out of warranty (only 6 months) so out of luck. $400 item that lasts a year? what a rip off. Also purchased goal zero solar panels and have kept constantly charged with either wall or solar power. Very expensive battery that lasted a year. would not recommend and will not buy future goal zero products.

Battery, inverter, various outlets, amp meter, volt meter, regulating various input sources. Trying to piece tougher a compatible solar system that can be charged from multiple sources and power items with various 12-volt attachments can be a wiring mess and complex to figure out, especially for relatively minor electric needs. The Yeti 400 has figured this all out so you don't have to and offers it in one convenient package. Simply plug it into a standard household electric outlet, your car's cigarette lighter or a solar cell to charge with no need to worry about what regulator/controller you need to charge it properly without overcharging. Various outputs are also ready to use, making it very adaptable.

While very convenient, the included 33 AH battery offers fairy limited storage capacity for a 12-volt system. This can be doubled or tripled however by chaining additional compatible batteries, to create a 100AH system. I used this primarily to power a small dometic fridge on road trips when base camped for a couple days when 110 or car power was unavailable. (one additonal battery chained)

Most complaints, I've read are not so much problems with the unit itself, but people not realizing how limiting a 33 AH capacity battery really is, or not understanding how solar cells really charge. Here's a few key points that have been mentioned in other reviews, that I think are worth mentioning again:

1. 33 AH isn't a lot storage. You can't expect to power notable electric needs with this. Calculate your actual needs before purchasing. No 33 AH battery system will fulfill a 50 AH need without recharging.

2. in fact, a 33 AH capacity doesn't even mean you can power something requiring 3.3 amps for 10 hours. Many things won't run on a near dead battery, draining, a battery to zero isn't good and when trickle charging especially, it's hard to get a full charge. (One could write an entire book chapter on the nuances of this alone)

3. If charging via solar, realize a 100 watt solar cell will not increase your battery storage by 100 watt hours for every hour light is shining on it. 100 watts is the max output that solar cell will produce under ideal conditions. Many factors can decrease the efficiency of your solar charging. Read up on it.

Other reviews and other sources go into great detail about how to calculate electric needs, what you get from a given capacity, and how to calculate what you will get from solar charging. My point is simply that if you have unrealistic expectations, you will likely be disappointed.(with any 12-volt system) Spend the time to accurately figure out your needs, whether this meets your needs as is, whether you need to chain additional batteries, add more solar, etc. Having wired a couple sailboats myself, I have to say the convenience of a single self contained, portable system has it's benefits, but total storage is not one of them.

In terms of a well thought out, convenient system, I might give the Yeti 5 stars. I give it 4 primarily due to the relatively high cost for the relatively low storage capacity it has. Some better accessory cords would also be nice. Chaining with allegator clips for example. I certainly have no regrets about this purchase.

We purchased our Yeti a year and a half ago. It has never seemed to work correctly and has just gone downhill. We have discovered it is not fully charging. We plug it in to the wall and it will say it is fully charged. Once we plug something in to it, it immediately drops to 60%. It seems to only be getting a surface charge. We bought this to run a CPAP while camping and we’re kucky to make it through one night. It is a great concept, but it is unreliable and way too much money for such unreliability. I’ve found on comment boards others having similar problems. Quite disappointing.

Note when ordering from Amazon: The manufacturer makes it very clear these batteries should be charged up at a minimum of every three months. There's a very real chance you will order a battery that's been sitting on a shelf uncharged for longer than that.

When my battery arrived, it was beeping inside the box. That was the low battery warning sound. Who knows how long it's been that way. It didn't charge at all overnight. The battery was completely shot. Fortunately I have a battery tender plus and after about 24 hours my battery was brought back to life, so it is possible to save it if yours arrives dead and unable to charge from the wall.

As far as the battery itself, it's great! There are plenty of glowing reviews here and on Youtube. I paired mine with a WindyNation 100w flexible solar panel. Very light and much cheaper than what Goal Zero sells. Taped it on top of my canopy tent. You just need to buy the Goal Zero MC4 adapter to get it working. Would recommend an extension cable too if your panel will be far from your Yeti.

The battery does pretty much what I wanted it to do - be the backbone of an emergency Internet connection. It has three outlet sections, each controlled by a switch (nice touch) - a USB 5V section, a block of 120V AC outlets, and a block of 12V outlets. The status display tells you exactly how much wattage you're drawing - an indispensable aid to figuring out the minimum you need to keep the connection alive for several days (I got 3 days with 4W of output) with no power input.

The design flaw is inconceivably stupid. Two of the three 12V outlets use 6mm sockets. Those are incompatible with just about any readily available 12V connector - those are commonly 5.5mm. It's almost impossible to find cables that use a 6mm plug to fit those sockets.

Had those sockets been 5.5mm, I would have given this product five stars.

When my yeti 400 arrived i was super excited to open everything and to my surprise it also comes with a 4.5 mm adapter to 8mm.

Solid construction and is just under 30lbs, my favourite feature is that you can turn on and off what ever connection you are plugged into on the pack. some packs when you plug it in, it begins to charge right away but if you want to just kill the switch there is a button for that.

At full charge today i ran a 12v portable fridge as i am preparing to go OTG ( off the grid ) overloading camping and need a way to work remotely as well as keep a fridge going. the fridge was running totally fine all day ( 10.15 hours ) before the battery ran out. also i was charging 2 cell phones and also using my work laptop running from that pack as well at one point in the day to charge it up. the fans kicked in a few times as it was using a total of 110 watts out periodically as the fridge would kick in.

I am really impressed with this generator and so glad i sold my 2 gas generators.

The only real negative thins i could say would be the handle.... nothing wrong with it as it is a very sturdy handle but when driving around with it in the truck, it's all i can hear rattling around when going over bumps and rocks. i will be mounting it at some point and will use the handle as a tie down spot anyways but i wish there was a way for it to be clipped down.

really really happy with this pack

you can use it while being charged but keep in mind that is has about 60-65 watts coming in via the DC wall adapter so what ever you are using should be lower then what is coming in.

i am doing a test tonight, running the fridge all night off of it while it charges.

it takes about 5-6 hours for a full charge so lets see when i wake up how its doing as it was fully dead dead tonight.
my overloading Instagram is Roadramr so i will most likely talk about it sometime there.

oh and also i chose to order it from a Canadian company Microcel based out of i believe Newmarket Ontario and they have a lot of other fun tech items and battery solutions as well so check them out :)

Nice product. We did have some battery issues in the first 60 days which oddly went away with no intervention from manufacturer. Had contacted support and they were helpful. Using it to power lights and water pump. Also for charging electronic devices.

Solar panels charge the yeti well in good conditions. Inverter generator used to charge it otherwise.

I can charge it with my solar panels as well as with the A/C adaptor provided. I plug in a power tap with 4 outlets and can charge my laptop, cellphone, tablet, etc. at the same time. It gives me power long enough for a whole day. Charging by the sun takes a bit longer than by A/C, depending on the hours of sunlight available. I have used it for numerous cycles and it works great. Most useful when power is required outdoors such as camping, barbecuing, etc. It worths the money as it can be used many times, free if charged by the sun and cheap if charged by A/C outside peak hours.
