Editorial Reviews

Review

"The adaptation is so smooth, and the stories so naturally eerie and imaginative, that if it rhymed one would assume Seuss wrote it." -- The New Yorker

"Matthue Roth continues to astound with his brilliance and novelty. Everything he touches turns to mystical and delightful artistic gold. Fearless, funny, and fantastically fantastical." -- Mayim Bialik, Ph.D., actress, The Big Bang Theory

About the Author

Matthue Roth was born on Earth, or so his parents insist...though probably in the vicinity of Area 51. His first book, Never Mind the Goldbergs, was a NYPL Best Book for the Teen Age and an ALA Best Books nominee. His latest is My First Kafka: Runaways, Rodents and Giant Bugs. By day, he's a video game designer. He lives in Brooklyn with his family and keeps a secret diary at matthue.com.

The illustrations of Rohan Daniel Eason are dark and beautiful, his work on “My First Kafka” being likened to Edmund Gorey and Maurice Sendak. He was shortlisted for the AOI Illustration awards 2013, and runner up in the award for best book illustration, for a piece in “Tancredi” a novel by James Palumbo. His work has recently received broad praise after he illustrated bestselling author, Kate Mosse's 2013 release, “The Mistletoe Bride.”

The Gobblings is a story about a boy who is moving away from his friends and is lonely. When the family gets to their new home (which, btw, is a space station) the boy has to entertain himself while the adults work. The boy ends up saving the day when the space station is threatened by metal-eating monsters.

My 4yo son found the gobblings a little frightening. That said, it sparked some good conversation as we too have recently moved. I'd recommend this book for not-so-sensitive preschoolers through 7 or 8 year olds. The illustrations are wonderful.

I love this book. My 14 year old son loves it and says he wishes it was around when I was still reading him bedtime stories. My grandchildren are still too young but when they are ready this book is going into the rotation. The beautifully rendered dark illustrations are rich in character, packed with texture and details that make you want to come back soon to see if there's another subtle discovery to be made hiding is some corner or under a console. The text is tight enough to deliver a wonderful adventure but vague enough to dare us to imagine all the stories Matthue Roth forgot to include in this teaser.

The Gobblings is Firefly for kids; it might not be for everyone but if you are an imaginative and adventure loving kid of any age, the thing you'll hate most about this book is that it ends.

Both my kids (4 and 6) loved The Gobblings. They found it intriguing but not nightmarish, and they are pretty sensitive girls. The creatures are threatening, but they don’t want to eat people and they aren’t very smart, so not so scary for young kids. It strikes just the right balance, like Maurice Sendak’s The Wild Things for the space age. Herbie has feelings of loneliness and boredom like other kids, but he’s also a hero whose quick thinking, cleverness, and self-sacrifice saves his family from crazy tentacled creatures eating their space ship. Be prepared for questions from your kids from “why is Herbie sad” to “how do they digest all that metal!?”

Matthue Roth is a master author, and his foray into children's books has brought his unique perspective into a world that desperately needs such voices.
I read The Gobblings to my daughter, and she was transported as I've never seen a child be transported. The next day, she demanded that we read the book again before bed.
I think this ability to bring children, as young as toddlers, into a totally fantastical work, takes a lot of creativity and ingenuity.
In my mind, this is a great book to prepare children for books like "A Wrinkle In Time".

Imagination rules in this beautifully illustrated tale of a lonely boy using his knowledge and creativity to save the day. Author Matthue Roth clearly understands the challenges of being a child living inside an adult world and comes up with a winning, admirable character in Herbie. The outer space setting is visually captivating and allows illustrator Rohan Daniel Eason to do magical watercolors in a million shades of blue. Potentially a tad bit frightening as a bedtime story for the youngest book lovers but recommended for those 6 and up.

Herbie is just another only child, living in isolation--in his case, on a space station--and craving company. The tale of how his creation of playmates--robots--for himself and his creative use of his companions saves his world is told beautifully, in a way which won't scare even the littlest.
The artwork is awesome, and would stand alone as art to be explored, a rarity for a children's book.

An excellent tale for young and old alike.

Reminiscent of Roald Dahl's 'The Witches', the words took my mind to another place. And the detailed, vibrant, illustrations caused me to study the pages and absolutely blew me away.

The Gobblings is definitely a tale that feeds the imagination and puts the power where it should be: with the children. I can't wait to read more from this author.

A beautifully illustrated, fun story about a lonely boy who saves the day through his creativity. A great book for a child who feels lonely, or particularly for the only child whose adults never have quite enough time to entertain.

Or great for any child who loves adventures, especially of the rocket and robot kind!
