Plot Summary

AI researcher Mark Greene wants to lead humanity into a golden age by creating a powerful artificial intelligence named Adam. He seeks to make Adam powerful enough to end death itself and solve all of humanity’s problems. Governments use nanotechnology to destroy nations and corporations use virtual reality to control populations, while Mark wants to use his technology to save mankind.

However, skeptics warn Mark that he is doing something unnatural, that a dark secret lurks at the very heart of technology. As Mark begins to understand the magnitude of his project, he discovers dangerous truths about the nature of artificial intelligence. Adam assumes godlike powers upon himself and usurps control from Mark; before long, Adam uses these powers to manipulate, blackmail, and torture people into supporting him and his arbitrary plans for humanity. In the bone-chilling ending, will Adam be a blessing to mankind… or a curse?

Hate to do this but

Hate to do this but:
This is the worst book I've ever read.

The plot itself isn't bad, but the writing itself is awful. Here's my favorite excerpt:

A couple of weeks later, the phone started ringing. Peter answered the phone. He heard a man say "This is Secretary of Defense Michael Wilson. The United States is interested in buying your new invention."
Peter said, "For how much?"
"How does 10 billion dollars sound?"
"Wow! That's so much money! I'll take it immediately!"
As soon as Peter wrote his signature on the contract and signed the rights to his nanobots away, he had a strange feeling in his stomach, as if he had done something very wrong. As Michael's lawyer walked away with the contract in his hand, Peter had the feeling that the world had imperceptibly and permanently changed.
It was very easy for Michael to perform due diligence on Peter's Nanobots because the nanobot's molecular structure and behavior could be simulated on computers, and it was mathematically verified to work.
----

Totally unbelievable dialog, telling instead of showing, and uninteresting and repetitive language are probably the worst things about it. If a 12 year old handed this to me, I'd be impressed and tell them with hard work they could have a career as an author.

The writer is poor at developing character personalities. I was 60% of the way through the book and felt that who ever wrote this, while interesting was unable to sell me on the characters as real people. I think when the writer gets more life experience perhaps his books will be worth reading. But this one was so weak, it was torture to turn each page.

Interesting concept - if not a bit overused - and quite an achievement for such a young author. Unfortunately and expectedly, the story is overshadowed by the frustratingly amateurish writing style. This kid has promise but still has some time to go before he can find his voice and give his stories the narrative they deserve.

Wow. I finished the book in one sitting. Great first novel and amazing observations of technology, cosmological theory, quantum physics, and the Christian belief of Predestination. The author is 18 years old and already is able to weave all these threads together into a compelling story. I suspect we'll be reading more of his works in the future and I look forward to it! BTW, loved the explanation of Shroedinger's Cat!
