There's a story - and apologies for being fatheaded about this, but just hang with me a sec - about Pope Boniface VIII looking for the best artist in Italy. He wanted to commission some paintings for St. Peter's, so he sent his minion around to all the usual suspects for samples. Minion gets to the artist Giotto and Giotto says, "I'm busy. But here, take this." and he hand paints a perfect circle. "That's it?" says the minion. "If he's hip," says Giotto, "that's plenty. If he's square - like I say - I'm busy." Pope was hip and the Big G booked the gig.

And that's what you get with God & The Girl by David Poe. A stark and beautiful display of the craft of songwriting at its highest level. There's no artifice here, no flash, nothing to hide behind, and no misdirection. Mostly guitar and voice with some instrumental touches here and there. Does that sound too basic? Don't be fooled. There's real magic in how much room Poe gives the listener to participate. It's a gift we don't often receive in music these days, and it's really kind of startling.

What about genre, you ask? Is it jazz? Pop? Soft Rock? Folk? All I can say is that if you love music, and appreciate good songwriting, you won't need a box to put this in. Like the best of all great popular songs, the music is brand new and familiar all at once, and could have been written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, or Lennon and McCartney.

But I'm shouting too much about a piece of work that is very quiet and deeply personal. If you don't know David Poe, this is a great place to start. If you are familiar with his work, then you probably already agree with me that God & The Girl is a perfect cycle of songs.

Or do I mean a perfect circle?God & The Girl

Singer/songwriter David Poe delivers a thought provoking and heartfelt album, touching thoughts and feelings most of us don't realize we have.

The nature of an artist sometimes is to find the nooks and crannies of our own psyches that we've felt so often but have seldom had words to express. In his most recent album Poe takes interest in the feelings we get in the various snapshots of our lives some would overlook. The dawn of a journey with a new partner; meditations on what happens to the intimates we give to those we never see again; stages to overcome when losing the one we love, or even what happens after we ourselves are gone.

If you are familiar with the works of Duncan Sheik or John Mayer this CD will fit right in. This is an album that will make you think as well as make you sing along, with great craft in the writing not found often in artists these days. I can't recommend this CD enough to an aspiring writer or artist. Enjoy!

Lacking the clever writing needed to allow a minimalist presentation to stand on it's own. Pretty disappointed. Love Poe's work. But, evidently, I need a band to go with it since I found this effort short on energy.

David Poe's Album, 'God and the Girl' is possibly one of the most brilliant song written, arranged, performed albums of all times. A true talent; every song perfectly crafted. 'Taffeta' is seduction at it's 'tiny as a girl can go' finest.

Forget the fact that David Poe is friendly, down to earth, approachable, and a genuinely nice guy. Those are not reasons to buy and enjoy his music. The music is.

Very few artists can do what David Poe has done: consistently put out albums that are great. Of course I have favorites on each album, but every song on every album is fantastic. Even David's "throw away" songs (songs he not only has not recorded but won't even play any more) are great. The lyrics, the music, the arrangements are all so good, and David has a voice that is just fantastic, one can never tire of hearing him.

A lot of artists have a "shelf life"--it just seems they run out of good songs after a while. 17 years after the release of his eponymous album "David Poe" (which you must also buy!), he releases what has fast become my favorite album so far. The songs are beautiful and as always, David has a way of lightheartedly showing the dark side of love and relationships, making his songs come across as "real" rather than contrived. He's clearly a man who has loved and lost, yet is not afraid to love again.

David assures in his song "Let There Be No Longing", you will fall in love again. I assure you, if you buy this album and give it a few listens, you will fall in love with David Poe.
