What Matters in Life? Guns and the Natural World

Few things are as controversial as gun rights. Some say we need more laws to curb gun violence while others say we need to loosen laws because, if nothing else, we need to be prepared to defend ourselves as necessary. One person who is a strong advocate for gun rights is rocker Ted Nugent and his love of guns and the natural world are laid out for all to see in God, Guns, and Rock and Roll.

This book is one that remained on my book shelf for a LONG time. I actually obtained this book years ago, but it was pushed aside in favor of newer, recently released books. Then, here in my hometown of Houston, we got hit by Hurricane Harvey and were stranded in our homes for days. This was the perfect excuse to rummage through my book shelf and look for a book not yet read, and God, Guns, and Rock and Roll was the book I chose. I have been a fan of Ted Nugent’s music for a while so it was high time I finally read one of his books.

Guns, God, and Rock and Roll is more about guns than anything. The other parts of the books title receive only scant mention and this could prove disappointing to some readers who come here looking for a book about life as a rock star. It’s not that type of book. Its focus is on guns, the love of outdoors and hunting, and a ‘back to basics’ approach to self- sufficient living. The book stresses gun education and its positive message about the natural world and independence are obvious to anyone who reads.

Guns are controversial, but one thing about God, Guns, and Rock and Roll that needs to be stressed is that this is not an intellectual book with reasoned arguments. It is not a balanced approach to guns and gun rights. Rather it is one man’s strong opinions on guns and responsible gun ownership and it completely disregards counter arguments. The book is a quick read and a good part of the reason why is because you don’t have to go back and re- read. You know what I’m talking about- some books are so complex and deep that you have to read the same passage a few times to let it sink in. This book isn’t like that at all. Its message is direct and easy to comprehend. I read the full book in less than two days and never felt the need to go back and make sure I was clear about something. The author leaves nothing to doubt about his stand on guns, nature, hunting, and the like.

Ted Nugent is best known for his live performances but with God, Guns, and Rock and Roll, he shows that he also knows a thing or two about writing. Whether you agree with the author’s political stands or not, you have to admire Nugent’s genuine love for the natural world and his creative writing skill. With his vivid descriptions of nature, you feel like you’re right there with him and his sons as he tracks down his next meal and you feel the call of the wild as Nugent describes the incredible feeling that comes over him and his family when enjoying time together in the great outdoors.

God, Guns, and Rock and Roll makes for genuine, honest reading and it’s a book worth your time. I heard the battle cry, and I’m now in a stranglehold, waiting for my next opportunity to break away from the concrete and steel and experience nature in its full- blown glory. Read this book, and you'll feel the same way.

Nugent is a one off but solidly grounded in his views and beliefs. I totally agree with his ideas on making things better in this country. It is depressing how the bleeding hearts and the media have focused too much on the negative instead of accepting principles and values that have all but disappeared now. Ted's success as a parent and family man shines thru. Always after reality instead of numbing it with drugs, alcohol and video games he lives what is missing in our lives. Not everyone will embrace hunting but as he says "get off the pavement" and reconnect with the wild. I greatly admire the man

The book was received as a used book. This is clear by all the writing from one person to another on the inside cover and its tattered edges. While the book was average in reading, it would have been nice to know that I was paying for a used book. Since I gave this as a gift, you can imagine I was not very happy.

Great book, if you believe in God, Guns and Rock and Roll! Seriously, no one tells it the way it is quite like Ted. If you don't like the guy or agree with his opinions this is probably not the book for you.
