About the Author

Ken Whitt is the Executive Director of Traces of God Ministries, a nonprofit spiritual formation center founded after his retirement from 40 years of service to American Baptist Churches (ABC/USA). Ken's ministries have focused on nurturing children, youth and families, mission trips, prayer and efforts to build peace and justice. Through the ABC, he served on the General Board, the Board of International Ministries and the National Minister's Council. His love of global diversity extends from the communities with which he works to the global variety of woods that fill his woodworking shop at home. Ken has four children and 12 grandchildren. His wife, Kathy, is a stained-glass artist, weaver, gardener and spiritual director. They live in the Hocking Hills region of southeastern Ohio.

Always the perfect gift

Which Ken would you like to know more about? The parent of 4 and grandparent of 13; the executive director of a spiritual formation ministry; the pastor with 45 years of service with the American Baptist Churches USA; the passionate outdoorsman, victorious in white water canoe racing; the artistic woodworker; or maybe the advocate of baking bread and cooking on a campfire? Please, don't go looking for the song writing and guitar playing musician--unless you are perhaps a child who loves animals. If you are, ask him if he will thrill you with a rendition of his hit song, "I've got an animal in my pocket."

Since this is an author's page, let's pay attention to the writer who created over 2,500 manuscript sermons and a much smaller collection of published papers and articles. Ask him where the inspiration for writing comes from and he may tell you, cautiously, for not everyone is a believer, the Spirit points out a beginning and the words just happen. "When I don't know what to say, I wait. Some pretty strange stuff gets written this way, so I also must trust a talented editor to keep me on track. Inspiration also comes from my communities, neighbors, friends, spiritual companions, and especially my family--these days it is the grandchildren and others among the young and wise who motivate me and provide both content and energy."

What do you want to know about Ken's new book? "OK," you ask, "What is this book about?" "Who is it written for?" "What are the major themes? Here is Ken Whitt's answer. "God Is Just Love, Building Spiritual Resilience and Sustainable Communities for the Sake of Our Children and the Creation," is about God, Love, growing a deep relationship with God and becoming Love; and guiding the children we love towards finding hope and being love. It is also about caring for the creation, grieving what has been lost and saving what can be cared for and protected. If you are caring for children and care about their future, this book is for you. People who are interested in the intersections of spirituality and science will discover life-affirming insights Spiritual travelers of all kinds will find respect and challenges to contribute their insights to the well-being of all. Christians who long to follow Jesus amidst today's predicaments, will learn they can walk on water, no matter the ferocity of the next storm.

Christian writer Brian McLaren has recommended that you meet Ken as a pastor, mentor and friend. Christian Ethicist David Gushee will tell you that if you meet Ken in his writing, or otherwise, you will experience unconditional, Just Love. Ken wants to remind you that he is very excited just by the possibility that some readers will reach out and become community, family, with him. These are just a few of the gifts that are ahead for you if you will invest yourself in the person and the message.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith Shaping
By Kindle Customer on June 16, 2021
To say that Ken Whitt is a major influence on the foundation of my faith is an understatement, for sure. Ken was my Youth Pastor at Littleton First Baptist Church, and now over 40 years later, he is still a great friend and a spiritual counterpart in my life. I value the insights Ken has shared over all these years, and as you will read, he has a knack for helping folks get close to God. I intended to ask him while he was writing if his chosen title meant that God is only love, or God is a righteous kind of love? As you will read, he intends both. God is just in God's loving, but God is also the only love that powers this universe. God is that creative force that is behind everything that we experience.

I have always known that to limit God to our own human understanding is to miss the point. My personal faith is a cosmic kind of faith, based upon and rooted in those early days in the Youth Group with Ken. Give yourself a blessing and read God Is Just Love. Give yourself a further blessing by sharing this reading with a study group; as in survival games, everyone will benefit more by the sharing.

That's our son, Micah, that ceremonially fells the Cherry tree on the riverbank at Whitts' End. Ken's kids were born while I was in Youth Group. They are treasures to me. Visiting with them in our early married years, my wife loved the name, so yes, Ken will remain as a gift to our lives. Let him be a gift to yours.
