"John and Greg realize what everyone should know—that middle-class Americans are among the richest people in world history. It's time for Christ-followers to understand that God has bigger purposes than increasing our standard of living—He wants us to increase our standard of giving." —Randy Alcorn, from the Foreword of God and Money

John Cortines and Gregory Baumer met as Harvard MBA candidates in a men's Bible study and stopped asking "How much should I give?" and started asking "How much do I need to keep?" With their top-notch education and rising careers, Cortines and Baumer were guaranteed comfort and security for the rest of their lives. However, when their plans for saving and spending collided with God's purposes for extravagant generosity, they were each compelled to make a life-changing decision that challenges the values held by mainstream America and many Christian commentators. Cortines and Baumer show not only how to radically give, but explain how to do so responsibly.

        Greg Baumer

A native of Indianapolis, IN, Greg Baumer grew up attending Indiana Hoosier basketball games and working with his dad every Saturday in the family business. He went on to earn his BS in finance, business economics, and public policy from Indiana University in 2008.

After earning his MBA from Harvard Business School in 2015, Greg joined Nashville-based healthcare technology startup naviHealth as vice president of product development and innovation.

It was while taking a Harvard Divinity School course called God & Money that Greg began to think deeply about the intersection of faith and finance. As he came to the startling conclusion that underpins God and Money (formerly titled Through the Needle)—that Christians are called to a radical level of generosity—he began to move beyond tithing and embrace a financial strategy centered on giving.

        John Cortines

After launching his career in the Texas oilfields, John Cortines has recently decided to advance the biblical message of generosity full-time, joining the leadership team of Generous Giving. Turning down a lucrative expatriate job to serve this mission has been the defining moment in his own generosity journey – a journey in which God has proven tremendously faithful. He holds engineering degrees from Texas A&M University (BS, 2010) and KAU of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia (MS, 2011), and an MBA from Harvard Business School (2015).

In the research that informs God and Money (formerly titled Through the Needle), John brought his pragmatic analytical approach to a question that has always intrigued him: how should wealthy Christians handle their money? What does scripture suggest about the dispensation of riches? The result was a simple yet radical framework for managing wealth that John himself, a lifelong Christian steeped in biblical teaching, found transformative.

        Editorial Reviews

        Review

This is one of the most thoughtful and well researched books on giving that I have had the pleasure of reading. The frameworks presented in the book can be used by people at all stages of experiencing the joy of generosity. -- Waters Davis, President of National Christian Foundation Houston

John and Greg realize what everyone should know-that middle-class Americans are among the richest people in world history. It's time for Christ-followers to understand that God has bigger purposes than increasing our standard of living-He wants us to increase our standard of giving. -- Randy Alcorn, bestselling author (from the Foreword of God and Money)

The mission of Harvard Business School is 'to educate leaders who make a difference in the world,' and in John and Greg that mission has been fulfilled abundantly. It has been my privilege to be their teacher, their colleague and now their friend; and I wish them Godspeed as they take the transformative message found in God and Money out to their community and to the world beyond. I have learned to expect great things from them, and they have yet to disappoint. -- Derek van Bever, Senior Lecturer in Business Administration; Director, Forum for Growth and Innovation, Harvard Business School

I greatly enjoyed reading God and Money! God used the framework Greg and John described to challenge my perspective and practice of generosity. I realized in reading their book that my personal bias is more saver and spender than servant. What I truly desire to be is a fully surrendered servant of Jesus. This book gave me practical frameworks to move in that direction. -- Todd Harper, President, Generous Giving

        From the Inside Flap

"Fresh, entertaining, and practical. I read it twice!" -- DAVID WILLS President of National Christian Foundation

"Give your tithe to God. The rest is yours to save and spend." Sounds reasonable--right? Except that's not what the Bible teaches at all.

Two young Harvard MBAs on the fast track to wealth and success tell their story of God's transforming power and how it changed their lives and their relationship to money. They offer an honest look at what the Bible says about radical generosity.

John Cortines and Gregory Baumer, both MBA graduates from Harvard Business School, met in a men's Bible study group where they were confronted with a topic that would change the rest of their lives. As young Christians with sky-high earnings potential, what should they plan to do with their money? This question launched a fascinating investigative journey through the worlds of faith and finance that ultimately led to a startling conclusion that challenges the values of mainstream America and even of many Christian commentators.

SEVEN KEY PRINCIPLES OF RADICAL GENEROSITY--Packed with compelling case studies, research, and practical applications, God and Money outlines a simple framework and seven key principles for implementing radical generosity. No matter what your salary may be, Cortines and Baumer show how you can reap the rewards of radical generosity in your own life.

Money is a weird topic in the church. The Bible talks about it more than any other subject, but its barely mentioned in church. Or, when it is mentioned, everyone gets very uncomfortable. These authors have put together a practical book that takes an in depth look at what the Bible says about money and how we should approach it. There is a lot to wrestle with here and its likely you will push back on some of their advice . . . but you have something to push back on. One of the best things about this is that the authors are actually saying something, not offering general advice or platitudes which is often the case for a book in this genre.

Here are a few of the things that I took away from this book and am still thinking over:

        * Christians should set an annual income limit for themselves (Instead of asking 'How much should we give?', ask 'How much should be keep'?
        * Christians should set a wealth limit for themselves and their family
        * That wealth limit should be no more than 33 times the annual income level set
        * You should open your finances up to other Christians
        * You should support your local church and community issues where you reside first
        * You should focus on one charity if possible, aligning your time, talent, and treasure to create the biggest impact

Convicting, challenging, thought-provoking. There is a lot to wrestle with here, glad that I read this one. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and it will change the way I give moving forward.

Although most of my 35+ years of professional experience have been in the business sector, I did spend four years as a National Director of Development for one of the country's largest faith based not-for-profits and have spent my entire life as a part of the Christian community. Thus, I went into this book with curiosity, but without significant intent that two young and rather inexperienced scholars could teach this old dog any new tricks. My how God humbles the proud! I was dead wrong!

John and Greg use multiple origins of information as they share Biblical text, information from interviews, survey data, personal experience and new lessons learned to help the reader not only understand a historical context of giving, but also so that the reader can gain applicable lessons for consideration with their own life. From the earliest part of their writings in which they state, "It's not how much should we give, it's how much do we need to keep", they had my full intention and repeatedly challenged my earning, saving and philanthropic habits.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has interest in understanding God's advice for a peace filled financial life. Additionally, for those who believe that mankind is responsible and has the means to help those wanting for food, clothing, shelter, education, medical attention and other basic needs. The principles of this book might just help you recognize the powerful impact that can be made by benevolent individuals motivated by faith and/or a common goodness or responsibility to help their fellow man. If the best practices of John and Greg's writings are put into action all of us would be in a better position to help others as well as find financial peace and freedom from the potential imprisonment of the never ending quest for more.

Reading God and Money was an eye opening experience. It was a disappointment on one level. I was looking for help setting up a personal budget (according to biblical guidelines of course.) You know what I mean, such as how much to spend on a mortgage, food and utilities. It does that but not on the level that I was looking for.
The book is both less and more than I bargained for. The authors explored and now share what the bible says about stewardship. This applies to stewardship of money, time, and the less fortunate. You close the book with a new outlook on what we are expected to do with the gifts God has given us. A major theme in the book reminds us that all good things come from God. If we earn a living it is because God gave us the talent and opportunities to do so. Whatever that income produces or purchases actually belongs to Him. This means the money, house and everything else.
God and Money gives a broad guideline for how to live and how to give. It is directed to people with incomes over $100,000.00 per year who have the opportunity to live a good life with money left over. Generosity in giving to the less fortunate is a scripture based requirement according to the authors instead of a continued growth of personal assets. The book offers a different view on tithing than most of us have been taught. The principles can be applied to anyone but it was hard to relate to the goal of saving five million dollars and giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. The book talks about big money using big words and may be a little difficult for some readers.
My perspective on giving has changed and I plan to re-read the book. Using the worksheet and other resources (found at godandmoney.net) will help me work through the steps to determine how much I actually need to be able to live a decent life. Most of us will need to adjust the numbers given in the book on how much is needed to live on, save and how much to tithe. Everyone who believes in God can benefit from reading this book. Working in small groups may make it both easier to understand and easier to apply to our personal lives. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to live a godlier life by giving our best to God.

This is a must-read for anyone wanting to studying finances from a biblically based worldview. Although growing up in the church, it’s hard to believe id never researched these topics on my own. Incredible study and easy read. I started listening to the audiobook, but then I had to buy the book to see their graphs as it was all such valuable information.
