Not many are more skilled at the written word than the late Hitchens. I have this both as an audio book (read by the author) and in hardcover. I was pleasantly surprised by his handling of certain ethical dilemma-provoking issues like abortion and the reputation of atheist regimes (Stalin, Mao). While these are mentioned only briefly, he acknowledges those issues in a reasonable way. Not that the book isn't full of Hitchens' classic cultured irreverence. Entertaining, yet chock full of substantive examples.

It was a well researched book and despite Mr. Hitchens strong opinions on religion he offers up valid points on its failings. However, religious beliefs have a strong emotional component and objective discourse on them are all but impossible.

This is a tour de force that is long overdue. Hitchens' premise is that religion poisons everything, and his text makes a most convincing case that indeed, all organized religion has proven itself to occupy a political, not a spiritual, realm, and one with a common goal: totalitarian mind control over humanity. Hitchens bemoans the enormous media attention to so-called religious commentary, and by the time you've finished the last page, you'll likely join the majority of our race who believe it is way past time to dismiss the drivel that passes for 'faith' and get on with life, using our innate common sense and the basic human morality found in all of our hearts.
