With God On Our Side

 (108)6.81 h 21 min201313+
With God On Our Side takes a hard look at the theology and politics of Christian Zionism, which teaches that because the Jews are God's chosen people, Israeli government policies should not be questioned, even when these policies are unjust.

Exposes the ugly truth behind the beautiful fantasy.
Verified purchase
A young Evangelical Christian from a Zionist church goes to Israel and finds lots of trouble in the Holy Land. Christian Zionists are attempting to turn Israel into a fantasy homeland for Jews only, believing that this will help to create a beautiful new world ruled by Jesus.

However, what has emerged is an ugly rather fascist ethno-state that oppresses Palestinian Arabs, both Muslim and Christian, in many horrible ways. Arabs are treated worse than second class citizens and it's clear that ethnically cleansing the entire area of them is the long term goal. Arabs have their land invaded and slowly taken over by settlers. They are threatened harassed, and relentlessly mocked and bullied in the shrinking territory that they have left. Jewish people living in buildings above a Palestinian market, through dirty water, bricks, and all manor of garbage and filth onto the Palestinians below . A parade of Jews marched through this market chanting "Kill the Arabs!"

Of course the Israeli government also violates Arab human rights the movie reveals. They have built security walls that bite off large chunks of Palestinian territory, annexing it for Jews. Palestinians have to wait in very long lines to get through check points that take hours interfering with commuting to work and going to see a doctor.

But the Zionist church justifies supporting all of this violence and cruelty, by saying that it's God's will, and claiming that the ends justify the means. This is certainly a church that has completely lost it's way. It treats human beings like pawns in a game or like bits of debris, just things that one would use to achieve something, or unwanted objects to be removed. It sins further by making God responsible for it's war mongering and disinformation campaigns.

In an ideal world John Hagee would be regarded as a cult leader, and his church shut down.

Start of a great awakening
Verified purchase
This is a fantastic film on the real situation going on in Israel / Palestine. Do you ever read a news paper and wonder why the so called "terrorist" had a scissors but is always gunned down by machine gun? Do you ever wonder why the Holocaust that happened in Germany is extrapolated to the middle east who had nothing to do with that atrocity? More people died under Stalin in Russian than died under Hitler btw...but that's another story. Do you ever consider that it might be offensive to Jews to have evangelical "Christians" trying to convert them all the time? Do you ever wonder why the US government sends $10.4 Million dollars per DAY to Israel...a borderless country the size of New Jersey? Do you ever wonder why many reformed Jews do not support this apartheid state and illegal settlements? Do you ever wonder why any criticism of Israel automatically results in the outcry of "anti-Semitism"...as if the Israeli government should get a free pass to do whatever it wants without any criticism. This film is just the start of a great awakening about how the US has been sold a bill of goods under the guise of religion / fear / guilt and poor foreign policy.

This is quite a weak film in many ways and I concur with those who have said that it was propaganda, but not only that, it was weak from the perspective of modern biblical studies as well. On the propaganda side, it utterly ignores the context of the situation, namely that Jews recently endured the most horrific persecution in the history of the planet, namely the Holocaust, most of which was perpetrated by Christians. Not just nominal Christians either, For example, Gerhard Kittel whose works are still required reading in seminaries was an active supporter Nazi persecution of Jews. Christian Zionism is, in part an act of repentance on the part of the church. It also utterly ignores Arab racism and anti-Semitism as well as their repeated and horrific aggressive wars against Israel and barrages of other terrorism and suicide bombing. In this Harrell give the impression of being a spoiled upper-middle class American millennial without a historical consciousness or education. From the perspective of Biblical studies, it utterly ignores the New Consensus on Paul (formerly called the "New Perspective on Paul" but it's no longer new, having come to dominate the field of sophisticated academic NT studies since the early 70's). Namely it states that Paul as well as all the apostles saw themselves as Jews, continued to endorse the keeping of Jewish law __for Jews__, the continuation of all Jewish covenants with God, but saw Jesus as the means by which non-Jews could be reconciled into Gods family. One of the professors interviewed alludes to the latter part of the formula but not the former. That is, he refers to the reconciliation of non-Jews and Jews through Jesus, but not the fact of the continuation of the original covenant. Any interested party can read it for themselves in Romans 11. For a fuller treatment of this issue, I strongly recommend "The Mystery of Romans" and "The Irony of Galatians" by Marc Nanos who is the only author I know of who has won both Jewish book awards and Christian book awards for the same research.

Very good documentary which I will watch again giving a different perspective on Palestine than we typically hear from the Christian Zionists. It does interview prominent Christian Zionists such as John Hagee, so their perspectives are aired, but the focus is on the untold story of Palestinian Christians, and other Arab communities impacted by Zionism in their daily lives.

A very important message here.

I was not sure if I should give this four or five stars, but I chose five because this is such an important topic and it is well presented. The creators of this must be very brave to address such a topic, but I am glad that they did.

Even before seeing this film, I have been troubled by the idea that Israel belongs to the Jewish people. Sadly, this film did not address more of how the Balfour document came to be, and how it is a document that should really hold no weight at all. It also did not address many of the deeper issues that I am aware of. Nonetheless, the principal idea remains intact in this film: how would YOU like it if someone came and threw you out of your house, segregated you, and forced you to live in a "ghetto," all because they claimed the Bible said THEY should be there instead?

When I watched this film, and I saw the terrible gates and walls, with their coiled barbed wire, I could not help but think of a comparison between the concentration camps of World War II. How can the Jewish people do to others what was done to them? It seems surreal. I would think their experiences in World War II would have made them more compassionate as a people towards others. We are constantly reminded of the holocaust by the Jewish people, and yet it upsets me that they never memorialize the Christians who died during the holocaust too. The focus is entirely on them, and yet they can turn and do something rather like that to another people? They are so obsessed with the fact that they have suffered as a people, that they forget ALL OF HUMANITY has suffered throughout time, not just them.

The Evangelical reasoning is also nonsense. I am glad that I am not an Evangelical, because I have always been taught that the Jews err greatly by not accepting Christ. We love them, certainly, and I have many Jewish friends, but Judaism was fulfilled with Christ. The chosen people are no longer those who call themselves Jewish, but those who are one with Christ. Therefore, to argue that the Holy Land belongs to the Jewish people of today makes no sense, for the true Jewish people of today are the Christians.

It is so sad to see so much suffering over a spot of earth. If God wants one group to have that area, let HIM work it out. Is He not God? Can He not give it to who he chooses with a wave of His metaphorical hand? But to launch wars and drive people out of their homes over it is just so sad. I really feel for the people who are suffering as though they are somehow less than the Jews. I said it and I will say it again: the Jewish people are no longer the chosen people. We have no obligation to stand behind them in this "fight."

My condolances to all who suffer on both sides. When will the fighting end?

Watch Carefully and Hold Your Opion Until It's Done

I started watching this video agreeing with John Hagee. I also keep in mind that when Israel came back to her homeland, her people didn't even claim their entire inheritance. God originally gave Abraham's descendants everything from the ocean east to his homeland which is much of Saudi Arabia. As I continued to watch, I realized that there was an entire community being buffeted by both sides because they were not Israelis and they were not Muslims. They were Christians who were not blooded Israelis. The film talked about American Christian churches partnering with Israeli communities which is admirable, so long as they don't ignore their brothers and sisters in Christ already living there. Mr. Harrell is correct in stating that we need to be mindful of all sides of this political stew and try to be neutral peacemakers on all sides, remember that everyone needs to be treated like people.

Bias Documentary
Verified purchase
This documentary has seems to appeal to the pathos of human rights of the Palestinian people who suffer the loss of property and the daily check point for the safety and security of a nation. This movies never mentions the terrorism caused the PLO and Hamas. Many different fallacy of reasons can be found in the argument that this documentary makes against Israel. This is a rather bias documentary thay doesn't tell the whole story. Both the Israeli/Palestinian narrative need to be heard respected and understood. Christian Zionism isn't a ideal to ushering of the ends times. Zionism is the Jewish peoples sovereign right to reclaim their begotten land. This documentary fails to make a balanced view of the conflict.

Garbage - This movie is a disgusting distortion of reality and truth.
Verified purchase
This is one of the biggest garbage pieces I've seen in a long time.

The director includes the statistics that Jews have been on that land since they entered it in Biblical times. Yet, somehow the point is made that the Jews came back to the land? Which one is it, they came back to or they were there? If you make the claim that they weren't there then make that claim and stick with it. Historical records should prove whether Jews have been absent from that land, because if they haven't been absent from the land then they aren't coming back after 2000 years... they're there the whole time.

Yes, it is shocking that Jews have been present on that land the whole time, mind-blowing really.

The facts are that Jews have been present on that land since entering it, even with the different historical dispersions, there have always been Jewish populations there and when the Diaspora Jews came back to the land... you know, the ones that were kicked out of Arab lands in 1948, they rejoined the Jews that had been on that land since ancient times. European Jews weren't the only emigres, the post 1948 exiles from Arab lands also came back from Galut.

To include Norman Finkelstein as an expert on the middle east peace process is like including Yasser Arafat on a list of Nobel Peace Laureates... (while we're at it, lets add Barack Obama as a credible Nobel Laureate). Norman Finkelstein is a Hezbollah apologist and is a product of his hard leftist parents. Norman Finkelstein has openly supported allowing for Holocaust denial. Look up Norman Finkelstein and research this credible witness.

John Hagee puts it correctly at 7:00 minutes, Palestinians are a post 1967 invention. Go and research Palestinian people prior to 1967, 1948, 1917. Clearly define what a people are and see if what you find fits that description. Don't be lazy, do the work.

[Sarcasm] Shocking that post truth and lived experience would be more important than objective fact based truth. [/sarcasm]

This movie is a disgusting distortion of reality and truth. Narrative driven lies for the unsuspecting individual. Seeing as most people are too lazy to do their own work, as was evident at the beginning of the movie by the poor SOB evangelical family "well we were brought up and we never questioned". Then all of a sudden this movie is a documentary on their poor son who is on a journey of discovery... discovery of injustice and the truth of the evil Israelis...

The only thing this movie didn't do is openly support suicide bombings. I was expecting a justification to sending balloons with explosives across the border, that is must be okay to blow up unsuspecting children in the name of Palestine, a non-exist people from a non-existent country.
