It starts off with all spy-action. Lester Dunn is a CIA agent on the trail of a notorious terrorist who manages to always escape harm. And then the story heads into the congressional trials of "why were you there?" and "who organized this attack?" and etc. A lot of finger pointing and people avoiding blame and secret dealings.
The story shifts to Thom Burke, a pharmacologist on the search for a "God" gene, the one thing built into the RNA of every person that holds the potential for a belief in God. He brings on his hacker friend, Frankie, and a geneticist, Elaina, to help with building this "drug" under the radar at UCSF, though a major drug company, SANTO, wants to be the first to find "God".
Meanwhile, in France, Roman Tomasi is building a computer software he calls Sellah...his version of God that's really a virus that learns all, knows all, is all. He's friends with a priest who is guiding him on this journey into God.
And somehow, all of these stories that seem separate and unrelated, are sewn together in this great fabric of a story. It's very twisty and interlocks in ways I couldn't have imagined. Beautifully done. Surprising and shocking.
There is a story after the story. The most shocking part of all. The part that left my haw dangling and me just whispering... "wow" as I was shocked. Entirely surprised and didn't see it coming. BRILLIANT! It not only tied everything all together, the end was clean and perfect!
Overall, I cannot recommend this book enough! I loved it! Definitely a winner!
Loved it...but it scared me.
