God in the Rainforest: A Tale of Martyrdom and Redemption in Amazonian Ecuador
Purchase options and add-ons
God in the Rainforest traces the formation of this story and shows how Protestant missionary work among the Waorani came to be one of the missions most celebrated by Evangelicals and most severely criticized by anthropologists and others who accused missionaries of destroying the indigenous culture. Kathryn T. Long offers a study of the complexities of world Christianity at the ground level for indigenous peoples and for missionaries, anthropologists, environmentalists, and other outsiders. For the first time, Long brings together these competing actors and agendas to reveal one example of an indigenous people caught in the cross-hairs of globalization.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Indians in Ecuador in the 1950s and beyond forms the definitive narrative of that sprawling, complicated, seemingly remote endeavor. It also ranks among the most impressive studies of the entire American missionary impulse. God in the Rain Forest reveals Long's eye for the telling quotation, insight into the ironies that marked the Waorani
story, and appreciation for humor in the midst of heroism, conflict, tragedy, and pain. Mercifully free of jargon, Long's elegant prose shows us what history writing ought to look like"--Grant Wacker, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Christian History, Duke Divinity School"Long makes good use of oral histories and interviews as well as the more complex life of Dayomae, a long-time Christian convert who worked closely for many years with Protestant missionaries. This is a diligent, open-ended exploration of a little-known international incident." --Publishers Weekly

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2019I was raised a missionary kid in Colombia, and our first few years on the mission field, 1960-67, were in the southern part of Colombia, near the Ecuadorian border and the location of the Waorani (Auca) tribal lands. The story of the slaying of these five young missionary men and the book Through Gates of Splendor were part of my earliest memories. This book was exhaustively researched, and it's fascinating to hear the story from many points of view. I believe that Ms. Long provides a broad and objective view of the many cultural, religious, and anthropological factors that surround this fascinating historical event. She is also an excellent, articulate, and clear writer. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2019I am a Christian layman who has gone to Ecuador several times on short term mission trips. I was interested in the story of Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Elisabeth Elliot, Rachel Saint before I went, but have become even more interested since my trip to Puyo, Ecuador and my visit to Nate Saint's house in Shell. This book is a very balanced treatment of all the players in perhaps the most famous missionary story of the 20th century. It will be of interest to all who care about the sharing of the gospel with all people groups as well as any who are interested in Ecuador. It's a great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2019A very important book for those who remember the killing of the missionaries to the Aucas in the '50s. A complete history of the tribe, the anthropologists, the oil companies, the pilots, and the missionaries (Catholic and Protestant), the Bible translators from that day to this.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021Really enjoyed the in-depth examination of the context and consequences of this very famous story both for missions, the missionaries and the indigenous people
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019I enjoyed reading about the difficulties of reaching the Wao people. This isn't just a Christian missionary propaganda, feel good message. It tells the good, bad, and ugly of all that went on from the 1950s to the present.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2020The story of the 5 missionary martyrs is a story of my childhood heroes. This fresh retelling of the story is compelling. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2022Anyone interested in history or missionary work will love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2019Interesting to read. Shared historical events on all sides. Lots of research done to write it
