About the Author

Danusha Goska was born in New Jersey to peasant immigrants from Poland and Slovakia. Her grandfathers were coal miners. Her dad mined coal as a child and fought in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Her mom cleaned houses and worked in a candle factory. Danusha has lived and worked in Africa, Asia, Europe, on both coasts, and in the heartland, of the US. She holds an MA from the University at California, Berkeley, and a PhD from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her writing has been awarded a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Grant, the PAHA Halecki Award, and others. Reviewers have called her work "inspirational" and "groundbreaking." Her book Save Send Delete was inspired by her relationship with a prominent atheist. Julie Davis, author of Happy Catholic, called Save Send Delete one of the ten best books of the year.

I practically read this book in one sitting... which says a lot because I have piles of partly read books all over my house. Like Goska's brilliant work, Save, Send, Delete, this touches your heart, mind and soul. God through Binoculars tells very personal stories about a hard life as an abused child, sufferer from learning disabilities and health crises, and poverty. With this backdrop, we are stunned by her spirit. She has a way of looking at everything that draws you in and spins you around. Her observations of the natural world are enlightening. There is delightful lightness and humor amidst a life that would challenge the best of us. You just want to be her friend, give her hugs and stay up all night contemplating god and the universe.

Sometimes a rambling stream-of-consciousness, but worth every second of your time. Life is tough but Danusha Goska manages. Her story is part tragedy, part comedy and one-hundred percent love. I bought the book after reading a brief mention in some obscure magazine. Something about the review piqued my interest. Her story itself never once let me go. Beautiful words. Beautiful book. Beautiful writer.

Danusha Goska’s book, God through Binoculars, is refreshingly honest and deeply thought provoking.

We embark on a journey with Goska as she travels to Holy Cross Abbey in Virginia. She lets us into her mind and heart as a witness to her internal wrestling with a dysfunctional upbringing, growing up a child of Eastern European immigrant parents, her connection to nature and humanity (both it’s awe inspiring moments and it’s wild cruelties), her religion: Catholicism and it’s relationship to Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Paganism, her education and her difficulties finding adequate employment, illness, poverty, love, friendship, hitchhiking and most of all CONNECTION.

Danusha is brave and brutally honest. My heart opens and aches for her in relationship to the difficulties she faces in life. Yet she is resilient, she’s a survivor and she keeps going. She is able to savor the awe inspiring and ride out the pain. She is extraordinarily able to maintain a sense of humor. I laughed out loud many times while reading.

Often I fell in love with how she views the world.

Some of her thoughts and stories really resonate with me and some do not. I do not agree with all her arguments. However, I do find all her arguments very well thought out and stimulating. She is brave, honest about her opinions and makes me think about the time we live in, when political correctness is in the forefront of many issues: from politics, to religions, to race and sexuality. Goska does not hold back, she truly shares her experience and how she views the world. She is an observant, intelligent, savvy, salt of the earth, compassionate and worldly thinker.

Goska’s memoir covers a lot of ground and there is something for anyone who is curious. Her thoughts wander like ones thoughts often do while traveling by car, truck or bus out on the open road. She talks about hyena’s, indigenous south American cultures, Monotheism, Catholicism, Peregrine Falcons, hitchhiking, being a woman, plant life, birding, Ravens, Ancient Egypt, Islam, synchronicity, observations of people, suicide, traveling and experiencing other cultures, education, mentorship, crushes and more.

God Through Binoculars is so thought provoking that I highly recommend reading it with a friend or a book club so that you can talk about all the interesting issues and insights that are raised in Goska’s writing. I was reading this book while on vacation with my husband. We had a number of wonderful conversations that stemmed from Goska’s thoughts and observations in God Through Binoculars.

The writing, the observations are luminous, transcendent, and I don't have, regrettably, a spiritual bone in my body. Typically skimming hundreds of books a year, there is so much and too much depth in this book not to savor every word and inference. I suspect I will return to this memoir repeatedly to glean as much as I can understand and incorporate from this masterpiece.

Many of life’s questions are asked and answered in the course of Dr. Gonska’s travels, observations, investigations, and insights. Reading this exciting book one finds a way of living and a way of observing to enrich the most impoverished life.
Danusha's life and our journey with her is described though observations of nature and birds, chance encounters, near impossible real-life coincidences, dealing with life-threatening pain, overcoming her childhood abuse and dyslexia, feelings of failure, questioning God and religion, while receiving answers to those questions; She examinations her life, heart and mind as she walks and hitchhikes, all the while observing and documenting bird species and bringing us into that learning experience as well. Many of her passions, her loves and disappointments serve to show us through those experiences how to interpret meaning, depth and understanding of the people we meet and meaning within nature and wildlife observations.
We discover her insights on human nature, even as she interprets to birds and wildlife with binoculars, inserting humor and wit unexpectedly into serious and keen observations. Danusha lives a life of clarity seeking truth. Her deep life insights into seemingly ordinary encounters help us with our own outlook life. One thing I loved is that you get to know a real person here, one who you like, and can move you to tears, with no hint of self-pity, yet make you laugh in the next moment. I found the book hard to put down.
