"A mysterious story about a jewel heist with a twist...This story delivers a lot of tongue-in-cheek one-liners and a type of slapstick comedy one might expect in some mobster movies...Campbell weaves a light, airy story with witty humor and a heroine with a likeable personality. This easy read has all the elements necessary to interest any reader, as well as teach lessons about literary elements like setting, plot, and characterization. It is a topic of high interest and readers will want to continue reading. This story will elicit a smile and a laugh or two. Give this to readers who enjoy a deliciously funny tale." In this zany crime caper romp, Gina Gallo is in trouble again because of her mobbed-up relatives. When she discovers some of her clients' jewelry has been rearranged, precious stones replaced with cheap replicas, she is sure her cousin Carmine is behind the crime. Determined to right the wrongs and save the good reputation of her jewelry store, Gina enlists her other cousin, Nico, a budding interior designer, as she attempts to return her clients' stolen property. This involves sneaking behind her fiancé's back, blackmailing an uncle, and engaging in reverse burglarizing. And when Nico cannot resist improving the tasteless decor of the homes where they B&E, he is dubbed the Lone Re-arranger.
Melodie Campbell knows how to have fun with her characters, her dialogue, and her plots. This one's the perfect light read for a hot summer day.
Thus, if you wish to read my original funny blog on both books, go to book one. It's there. HERE, I will say, book two is my favorite, which will no doubt make you wonder why it didn't get the funny review. Book 1 may likely resent all the rewards and praise that book 2 has gotten. And you have to be careful when dealing with Mafia books. While they won't go after family, the rest of us are fair game. Book two is superbly written, with hilarious writing, only this one has a much better plot. Thus, it has been given a derringer, which as a Mafia book, it no doubt likes a great deal.
The author, Melodie Campbell, has more street creds than a gun packing thug. While I spent years as a Financial Analyst, Melodie spent her time as a stand up comic. I like to think I'm funny, but seriously, who can compete with a stand up comic who grew up in the Mob?
In book 2, all the stars align, and Melodie nails the perfect humorous mafia book, and does so in short order. While both books are novellas, she manages to stuff so much in the books, you'll swear its a novel and she has some means of playing with time.
If you like to laugh, this is your book. If you want a serious mafia book with horses losing their heads, go elsewhere. Melodie gives you a taste of Mafia crazy, without any horse losing it's head, unless it laughs its head off.
Melodie Campbell's first book in this series, The Goddaughter, kept me in tears of laughter, and I was thrilled to find out that she was writing a sequel, thusly named The Goddaughter's Revenge.
The Goddaughter's Revenge is as funny, if not funnier, than The Goddaughter. When Gina's mob family comes together the adventures become crazy, illegal and entertaining. I'm not sure I remember a time that I laughed harder within such a short time span...
"No more sneaking hot gems across the border in my shoes! No sir. I wasn't even going to smuggle a donut into the States if they asked me. Which they might, because our donuts are way better up here."
Instead of sneaking hot gems there is a family member who decides to steal from Gina, her cousin, Nico, who plans to help her get the gems back. However this involves breaking and entering and Nico decides to re-arrange the furniture in the houses that they enter. How Gina will get through all this in one piece is a sheer miracle!!
With every story I love this family more and more. They put the "fun" in dysfunctional and I love how Gina's fiance, Pete, handles them with barely the blink of an eye. Gina and Pete are certainly made for each other, especially seen as he can put up with her family and their "not-so-legal" activities.
The Goddaughter's Revenge was another home run from Canada's funny girl, Melodie Campbell, and I'm hoping (and praying) that there will be more Gallo adventures on their way.
