One hot summer night, best friends Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Perla, and Pauline hold a séance. It's all fun and games at first, but their tipsy laughter turns to terror when the flames burn straight through their prayer candles and Fernanda starts crawling toward her friends and chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors.

Over the next few weeks, shy, modest Fernanda starts acting strangely-smearing herself in black makeup, shredding her hands on rose thorns, sucking sin out of the mouths of the guilty. The local priest is convinced it's a demon, but Lourdes begins to suspect it's something else-something far more ancient and powerful.

As Father Moreno's obsession with Fernanda grows, Lourdes enlists the help of her "bruja Craft crew" and a professor, Dr. Camacho, to understand what is happening to her friend in this unholy tale of possession-gone-right.

An ancient spirit, older than the earth, enters Fernanda and says: Naqui. Niyoli. I enter. I live. I am the Goddess of Filth... the eater of sin and the unclean...

This was a short but interesting story of possession. I can't say any more due to spoilers.

A little disappointing

At its heart, I do love this book. Stories of young women, wronged but strong because of their togetherness, their love and support for one another, always touch my heart. Throw in an ancient goddess filled with divine rage and lessons to teach, and I’m a sucker.

Unfortunately, the way this book was written is so terribly distracting in its stiffness, particularly the dialogue. Part of me wonders if it was done intentionally to lend a more “literary” air to the book — it’s things like no contractions, formal professions (“Let us work together, my friend”), the like. It gives a really weird tone that takes away from the story.

In the end, I liked the idea more than the actual work. Not terrible, but certainly not what it could have been.

Fernanda, the straight A student is suddenly acting strangely and speaking in Nahuatl, language of their Aztec ancestors. Who or what is possessing her? . Cultural phenomenon movie “The Craft '' evidently comes to mind, however, this book improves upon the typical “possession” trope . In that female bonds are created, nurtured, and strengthened throughout the story. Furthermore, V. Castro’s prose feels personal if not to herself then to the rich Aztec culture and ancestors. I educated myself as I read.

Story rightly takes pride in its vivid description of the female body and its desires. Filled with chicana brujas, unwavering bonds of female friendship, and celebration of the inner goddess. The story flows like a river until it catapults over and into a cenote. You willingly dip your head below the water and come out clear eyed. Harnessing a raw feminine power. As Lourdes says, “I wanted to strike like a predator in the wild.” Just phenomenal!! 5/5

When I purchased V Castro's Goddess of Filth, I was expecting to be entertained, creeped out, maybe a bit titillated. I did not expect to cry my eyes out. I don't mean in a sad way. Or maybe I do. Happy and sad both at the same time. Even though I'm way past the time of life that Fernanda and Lourdes are in, I still remember what that felt like and identified with their struggles as young women. I won't go into describing the story--the book is short, you can read it for yourself--but I will say that I was left feeling seen and empowered at the same time. I was inspired as a storyteller as well. I can tell this is a book I'll be coming back to again and again. Brava!

Much needed voice in horror fiction

After participating in a séance, Fernanda is possessed by some kind of spirit. Enlisting the help of priests and anyone else able to help deal with a possession; she begins a journey to get whatever it is inside of er unleased.

I loved the female perspective, so many coming-of-age books in horror seem to center around male adolescence. I love the way Castro depicts female adolescence. Castro does not shy away from exploring female sexuality and desire on the page, which makes for not only a sexy read, but an empowering read as it highlights the sexual drives of young women.

And the supernatural horror has a fresh perspective! Beginning with a séance inspired by the movie “The Craft” and it starts out with a female centric sense of spirituality. Yet, the Catholic tradition is drawn deeply upon in this story highlighting the Hispanic tradition as well. These points give this novella a very unique, much needed voice.
