What’s most resonant in Leslie Zemeckis’s biography of Lili St. Cyr is how utterly human this Goddess of Love truly was. This is the story of a disciplined artist, a deeply generous woman, a girl who loved and lost (and loved and lost again and again), and a lady committed to living a determined life. This book, like its subject, is seductive and absolutely captivating.” Jill Alexander Essbaum, New York Times bestselling author of Hausfrau

First it was the burlesque documentary on HBO. I wanted to know more about this producer, Leslie Zemeckis. Little did I know she would bring to life, not only on film but in books, the wonderful world of burlesque. Lili St Cyr. Ah, Lili, I was in awe of your beauty. Stunned by it as I grew up. But it took this Leslie Zemeckis, gorgeous in her own right, to tell her story in this book. This book answers every question I ever had about the "love goddess". I knew Lili but only in passing. The author has filled in the many blanks that were Lili's life. Even if you never heard of Lili St Cyr and even if you know little or nothing about burlesque, you must read this book. It is the no holds barred story of the power of beauty and a cautionary tale of "be careful what you ask for, you might get it". And Lili got it all, had it all and lost it all. Follow Lili's journey in this amazing book written by a gifted writer and you too will know the "incomparable Lili St Cyr.
And by "Giving up" on the way back down, I mean she did not even contemplate suicide, though she did drift into heroin use.
After a life filled with money, adoration, and stunning beauty, who could blame her for wanting to escape the reality of pitiless biology?
A Greek Tragedy, told with great skill by the author.
Her fatal flaw?
Lili lived "In the Moment", and judged everyone by their looks, especially herself, with terrible consequences at the last two decades of her furious life.
Her life story would be too much to cover properly in even the best movie possible.
I am surprised her story has not been made into a lengthy "Game of Thrones" type saga.
Perhaps that project is in the works.
The hardest part would be to find the right female to play her at her most stunning peak.
A great experience to read of her rise and fall, I read this book in three sittings, a fascinating life story, makes Erroll Flynn look like a choir boy!
Leslie was a delight to meet with regarding imparting information for this book. I do think, however that she may need her eyesight checked - she noted in her acknowledgements that I was a "dead ringer for Lili." Her highly generous comment is far from accurate, but nevertheless appreciated.
This revealed far more depth than I had anticipated and I appreciate the kindness of Leslie's portrayal of Lili. I'm sure she could have taken the facts and become highly opinionated in her depiction of Lili and the way she chose to lead her life, but she remained factual. I am grateful for this book.
