Top Customer Reviews
The following is an email I sent to Godox "I received the speedlight and was wondering what is the purpose of the black rubber band that came in the box Also, there is a strip of "fuzzy or loop side" velcro with an adhesive back side in the package. What is it for? How is the softbox attached to the speedlite? There is a narrow black band that has a plastic loop on the end, with velcro in the area of the loop. If it's for the soft box, how is it used? Why isn't there any identification to show which way the batteries should be loaded in the holder? Unless you know the bump on the metal strip on the flap is for the negative end of the battery, odds are you will probably put the batteries in the wrong way. Why is the flash head so difficult to rotate? I am afraid that the hot shoe would break if the flash head is rotated while holding the camera body."
So far, my first impression is not very good, but I will follow up once I use it.
Cons: The instructions are written with a very small font on narrow pages, and difficult to understand what they are trying to say. The rice paper it is printed on gives and impression it is "cheap". It would be better if it was on better paper, and bigger font with better illustrations or pictures.
Four of the buttons on the back of the flash don't have any identification, so you must remember what each button does.
The rotating wheel feels sloppy and wobbly as it is being rotated when making adjustments. Indicates questionable tolerances.
It is difficult to pull out the diffuser and white deflector, unless you have good nails on you fingers.
I will update this review once I have used it. My opinion might change... and my rating too.
The price is good, especially for HSS and TTL for my Sony A6000, so I have to take that into consideration on my final review.
Update: Godox replied to my email in two days, and provided more information regarding the installation of the soft box and gel filters. They are also in the process of providing a "how to" video in English. That might help with the learning curve. I increased the rating to four stars. Good customer care.
I still have a problem with the size of the text on the speedlite display. I am hoping that the brightness can be adjusted so I can see the small fonts more clearly.
I shot a few dozens pictures with the Godox on my A6000, and was impressed with the power output and quick recharging rate. I shot in TTL, then manual. All the shots were evenly exposed, with no light fall off along the edges of the frame. Communication between the speed light and the Sony A6000 was quick and accurate. I took shots outdoors with HSS without any problems,.
I have more to evaluate with this unit, but the more I use it, the more I like it. I am anxious to see how this works in my portrait studio. If it goes as I think it will, I will probably order another speed light and trigger, so I can make adjustments from the camera.
Stay tuned for more updates.
Update. Changed rating to 5 stars. I have been using this flash on and off camera, and it works extremely well. The more I use it the more I like it. I guess I had to develop a learning curve, because there is a lot of technology in this flash.
I ordered the trigger and will experiment with that today.
Customer service is excellent. I send an email to them with questions, I get a response the next day.
I will probably order another TT685S to use in my small portrait studio, and in the field.
