By: Susan Fanetti
I love Vikings and historical romance. The problem is that sometimes, it’s hard to find a good book in that genre, because so many are “campy” or just ridiculous that I almost pull an eye muscle because I rolled them too much. SO when Susan Fanetti announced that she was writing a Vikings novel, I was OVER THE MOON!! I have been a fan of hers since her first book, when I fell in love with her characters, their “realness” and her writing. I always know when I pick up a Fanetti book, that she won’t be using any of the overdone tropes and that her writing and storytelling will be impeccable. What’s more, Susan puts in hours and hours of research that shows through in her writing. I LOVE IT! I love the quality that she puts into all of her books and was stoked that she was writing a Vikings series, and now that I’ve finished the book… I WANT MORE! I want to live in their world, I want to see the people and friends and just bask in the world that Susan created.
Brenna was born with Odin’s eye and one regular eye. Her entire childhood, she was treated like an outcast to those outside of her family. She dreamed of becoming a famed shieldmaiden like her mother. And do to her diligence and hard work, she accomplished her goal. She was feared, as though she came from another world, and thus lived a fairly solitary life, without friends, confidants or people who would speak with her. Even her fellow raiders held her in some sort of esteem & regard.
Vali is one of the fiercest berserkers of his people. He has no fear, and he lives to fight. But when he sees Brenna, he’s not fearful of her like others. He is drawn to her spirit and is determined to learn about her and know her. Fighting together they are an unstoppable force. But that does not mean that they will have an easy life, even with the gods looking upon them. The life of a raider is violent and brutal and dangerous.
Even though there is violence in this book, there is also romance and love and a myriad of other emotions. Vali is lush and dreamy, strong with both inner and outer strength, loyal and loving. Brenna is such a strong heroine. She has a quiet, inner-strength and fortitude that most wish they had and can spend a lifetime never achieving it. This type of heroine is a trademark of Susan’s writing, which I adore and why Susan Fanetti is an auto one-click author for me.
I, of course, always want more after a book ends and when I got to the end, I was wishing that a miracle had happened and I could binge read the rest of the series (from Susan’s brain, since no others are written yet!) and stay immersed in that world.
There is a lot of graphic violence because this was the way it was in that time period and among the Vikings and Norsemen. Warning! There are women and children harmed during battles and raids. Defeated enemies are usually slain along with their families, including children, to prevent future vengeance.
The author did a great job with the world building and giving a vivid mental picture of what was going on. The H, Vali, is magnificent! A berserker with a soft side reserved for one woman only but oh what a sweetheart he is. The h, Brenna, is a warrior in her own right. No whiny, spineless female here. The two work well to balance their strengths and warrior tendencies to make their relationship work.
Peace during this time was mostly brief and hard won. Life itself was harsh. The happy life they are building with members from both clans who stay to settle the captured castle and the freed villagers is threatened by Brenna's own lord. But the gods have not turned from Brenna and Vali and vengeance will come.
I am impatient for the next in this series and highly recommend it to lovers of this type story.
I shouldn't have been surprised that I'd love this book as much as I did. I'll admit, I was hesitant at first because I thought it would be a long, hard read. But the way this story was crafted and told - I think this could be Susan Fanetti's best work to date!
I loved everything - the characters, the story, the detailed descriptions, the tales of legend and history, the dialogue, the steamy coupling scenes, but most of all and almost always for me, I loved the romance that is the heart of this authors stories.
Brenna and Vali... (sigh)... their love story is EXACTLY the kind of romance I enjoy and want to read. And their dialogue is like poetry to the ears. So much meaning. So many feelings!
“I love you.”
He smiled at her whispered words. “And it is the greatest thing I have known in my life that you do.”
“Make me see our stars.”
“Hold on to me, shieldmaiden. I will bring you all the stars the gods ever put in the sky.”
So, if you like Vikings, this book is for you. If you like action, adventure, a little drama and scheming, get this book. If you like romance, you will fall in love. And if you appreciate smart, stellar, researched storytelling and writing, you will enjoy this book as much as I have.
Get, buy and read this book!!! A gazillion stars!!!
God's Eye honors Viking mythology and culture - even its epic sweep is a nod to their ways - while giving us lots of grit and romance and hot lovin.' I can't say enough great things about it, and I can't wait for the next installment!!!
