~ What ~
Part of the Adventures of the Sea Kids series, this unnumbered thirty-two page over-sized hardbound targets children ages four to eight-years-old who like stories about fish and two iconic holidays. With no extremely scary or violent scenes, it would best be read out loud to beginner readers due to some complicated wording.
In this tale of two families who live under the sea, Christian and Mary are excited Christmas is coming while Jacob and Jeremiah are beginning to celebrate Hanukkah. The children compare their holiday traditions and argue if one side gets more gifts than the other. After each family is invited to the other’s, they learn of the differences and how God is the real gift to all of them. The ending includes a page to look for the crosses and Jewish stars hidden in the pictures.
~ Why ~
By reminding children that Christmas and Hanukkah are not about receiving gifts, this book promotes the two holidays are about God. While Jews celebrate a time when their Holy Temple in Jerusalem was rededicated and a little oil lasted eight days, Christians honor the birth of Christ, the Messiah. I like the bright colors and vivid illustrations.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not like books about two religious holidays may pass on this book. Some who are Christian or Jewish may feel uncomfortable blending both events under God, yet it is the same God who gave His only begotten Son who died for our sins, giving us eternal life. A few beginner readers may struggle with the two- and three-syllable words.
~ Who ~
Author Mancini is an adjunct professor in Florida as well as a wife and mother of two who devotes her life to Christ. Illustrator Sharp has over thirty years’ experience illustrating children’s books and lives in Michigan.
~ Wish ~
Believing the Messiah the Jew seek is Jesus Christ who came and saved the world from sin, I wish the book mentioned this fact. To me, Christianity is the answer to Judaism.
This book that focuses on Christmas and Hanukkah shows some of the differences of the two holidays. Those with blended religious families may find it a helpful way to explain the differences to young children.
Thanks to GLM Publishing and the author for the complimentary book that I am reviewing freely.
The drawings in the book are simply beautiful; they are the kind of illustrations a reader just wants to keep looking at! The book sends many positive lessons for children, and Mancini shows how people of different faiths can be friends and respect each other’s different worldviews. Both of the book’s protagonists, Christian and Jacob, have attentive parents who help them resolve their problems.
God’s Gift is part of the “Adventure of the Sea Kids” series, which also includes Fast Freddy, I’m Not Afraid, What a Bragger, and A Servant Like Jesus. Each of these books is well-written and constructed in a colorful, aesthetically pleasing manner, so it is great that the series now has a Christmas and Hannakuh themed book to add to the collection.
Through the series, Mancini has created a lively, intricate world, where the sea creatures live as humans do. The book has no many nice little touches; for example, we see that the sea creatures decorate the outside of their houses with holiday lights, and drink hot cocoa with marshmallows for a winter treat.
Mancini and Sharp have done a great job.
*I received this book for review*
Wow! This is an absolutely gorgeous book. There are brilliantly beautiful illustrations on every single page. The book is generously sized at 10.9 x 8.6, with each illustration filling each page. That’s a ton of eye-catching artwork for children (and adults) to enjoy. The book is sturdy and the pages are glossy, high quality.
The story of God’s Gift is wonderfully written, in kid-friendly terms that never talks down to its audience. Children will easily understand the concept of God’s Gift – that it’s not all about how many gifts you receive, no matter which holiday you celebrate. It’s about God’s love for us all.
The author does an excellent job of explaining the true meanings of Christmas and Hanukkah, in a way in which children can relate. I enjoyed hearing the retelling of the origins of both holidays. As a mother, grandmother and caregiver, I have no doubt boys and girls of any age will enjoy this charming book too. Highly recommended! Thanks to Book Crash, GLM Publishing and the author for gifting this book to me. This book would make an excellent holiday gift!
