What followed was a string of threats and attacks, but also successes in starting new churches in a place where many people had never met a Christian. As their work with refugees from Syria, including Kurds, gained attention and suspicion, Andrew and Norine acknowledged the threat but accepted the risk, determining to stay unless God told them to leave.
In 2016, they were arrested. Though the State eventually released Norine, who remained in Turkey, Andrew was imprisoned. Accused of being a spy and being among the plotters of the attempted coup, he became a political pawn whose story soon became known around the world.
God's Hostage is the incredible true story of his imprisonment, his brokenness, and his eventual freedom. Anyone with a heart for missions, especially to the Muslim world, will love this tension-laden and faith-laced book.

From the Inside Flap
Persecution of Christians is on the rise worldwide, especially in majority Muslim countries. Churches are bombed or burned, property is confiscated, individual believers are harassed or imprisoned, and in some places even the act of trying to share the gospel is illegal.
But where there are obstacles there are also opportunities.
Despite the difficulties of ministering in a country generally hostile to Christians, Andrew Brunson heeded God's call on his life. Let his story of faithfulness despite threats and persecution inspire you to a life of perseverance in the face of difficulty.|Andrew Brunson is an American pastor. He holds a PhD in New Testament from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Andrew and his wife, Norine, were involved in starting churches, training believers, aiding refugees, and running a house of prayer in Turkey for twenty-three years until being falsely accused of terrorism in October 2016. After this, Andrew was held for two years in Turkish prisons. Due to a worldwide prayer movement and significant political pressure from the US government, he was finally sentenced to time served and dramatically released in October 2018.
From the Back Cover
In 1993, Andrew Brunson was asked to move to Turkey, the largest unevangelized country in the world, to serve as a missionary. Though reluctant at first because of the daunting task that lay ahead, Andrew and his wife, Norine, became convinced this was God's plan for them.
What followed was a string of difficulties and threats, but there were also successes in starting new churches in a place where many people had never met a Christian. As their work with refugees from Syria, including Kurds, gained attention and suspicion, Andrew and Norine acknowledged the threat but accepted the risk, confident that this work was part of their assignment.
In 2016, they were arrested. Though the state quickly released Norine, who remained in Turkey, Andrew was imprisoned. Accused of being a spy and being among the plotters of an attempted coup, he became a political pawn whose name was soon known around the world.
God's Hostage is the incredible true story of his imprisonment, his brokenness, his faithfulness . . . and his freedom.

It’s all there— all the major questions: in relationship with God, as loving Daddy/Papa; in theology about sovereignty and spiritual warfare, as well as prophecy and how do we know if we are really hearing his voice; and within ourselves, as to how much will we choose to love and trust him no matter what, when nothing is making sense.
And all of that was worked through in weakness, the weakness that comes from trauma (especially in childhood) and from experiencing the dark, dark night of the soul, when everything is stripped away, and the sheer physical processes of panic have engrained themselves into our very brains.
God’s strength and Andrew’s strength both show up in Andrew’s weakness. His own strength in Jesus and from Jesus was demonstrated in his persevering and enduring in spite of utter depression and overwhelming anxiety that was virtually all-controlling, in circumstances that evoked all the trauma he had experienced in childhood and formed his “emotional” view of God, to the point of abiding thoughts and even plans for suicide.
He says he was weak, but his perseverance in spite of his “mortal wound” shows how strong he actually was—even though he had to receive it from God, minute by minute.
And Daddy God (Papa God) so tenderly and lovingly healed his heart through all of it.
We’ve been there. Our story is Andrew and Norine’s story, but on a smaller scale, of course. The essence is the same. The healing is the same. Our God is the same. Their story is really all of ours (again, on different scales of magnitude), and that’s what makes it so incredibly encouraging and even transformative for anyone who reads it.
My very favorite part is at the very end, when he explains why a prophetic word to him for his release from prison on a certain date did not occur. But DON’T skip ahead. You will lose some of the the experience of the journey if you do. Instead, “live in the question” with them as he tells the story, so the answer will hit you like a ton of bricks.
Norine, in so many ways, you are the human hero in this story. I do relate to you and all that is NOT said. Please write your own book. I’ll be on the waiting list to buy it.
Isolated in Turkish jails - the only American Christian among thousands of inmates - Andrew's world came crashing down. I admire people who persevere under adverse circumstances, people who have a few down times but mostly manage to walk right through horrible experiences with their faith intact.
But I can't emulate them. Andrew's rather lengthy dark night of the soul had him hanging on by a thread at times, fearful that he would lose not only his faith but also his sanity. Yet the thread never unraveled and he came out of this experience with a deeper understanding of the depth of the wisdom of the God he serves.
It was a privilege to see into the heart of this couple and to see how the deep waters did not, in the end, overflow them. I highly recommend this book and hope that it is available to readers for many years to come.
