The words that popped into my head the moment I read the last page?
Pure, unapologetic, brutal perfection.
This story is both glaring in it's beauty and harsh in it's ugliness, a dichotomy of yin & yang, a push & pull on your heart that stretches it like taffy and you can only hope that it doesn't break.
And yet, as hard as it is to read - it is necessary, it's valid, it matters. Because life isn't always wine and roses, it's not always love and tenderness. For some it's nothing more than a means to an upcoming end. Not everyone gets their happy ever after. Some get their happy....for a fleeting moment. Some find ever - a body to keep them warm while not caring that they aren't happy - at least they're not alone. And some get after - the knowledge that they were happy, they had found their 'ever' - but they let it slip through their fingers and now all they have is after.
This story, like Daddy Hades, makes no apologies for what it may or may not do to your heart - but in the end, if you're strong enough, if you can bear witness to the sometime harshness of life, if you look hard enough, deep enough within your heart and soul - you may just learn that there is beauty in everything, especially in this amazing tale.
I'll end with one final thought:
Sleep well, little lion, for when you wake and find that you are in the belly of the beast, you will finally know what it means to fight for your very existence.
