From the Inside Flap
billion people from throughout Earth's history were resurrected along the great and winding waterways of Riverworld. Most began life anew--accepting without question the sustenance provided by their mysterious benefactors. But a rebellious handful burned to confront the unseen masters who controlled their fate--and these few launched an invasion that would ultimately yield the mind-boggling truth.
Now Riverworld's omnipotent leaders have been confronted, and the renegades of Riverworld--led by the intrepid Sir Richard Francis Burton--control the fantastic mechanism that once ruled them. But the most awesome challenge lies ahead. For in the vast corridors and secret rooms of the tower stronghold, an unknown enemy watches and waits to usurp the usurpers . . .

This is the last book of the series, it does feel different from the rest, and does fall a little flat at the end. I liked that the characters were still chasing for the truth along the way. If you have read the 4 first books I'd still recommend reading this 5th one.

Having reached the tower of the Ethicals in the previous volume, Burton and his comrades must solve the mysterious death of the last Ethical and come to terms with their own godlike powers of resurrection now that they are in control of the tower's machinery.
I was disappointed by the four novels of the original series but, unfortunately, I am OCD when it comes to series, so I felt compelled to read this book anyway. (I have "Quest to Riverworld" sitting on my bookshelf as well.) The narrative often gets lost in the backstories and side stories of the numerous characters, so author Philip Jose Farmer doesn't manage to build up much narrative drive.

The least engaging book of the series. It dislocates the characters from the river, the most interesting aspect of the series, and fixates on the less-interesting sci-fi components of the polar tower. Well written and still interesting, but a bit of a letdown in context to the previous novels.

This series is a classic of its kind. It tells a good sci-fi story, even if it does sometimes get dragged down with dull and lengthy pontifications. It nevertheless told an interesting "what if" tale. It was basically a story told in four books, which ended in what seemed to be a conclusive ending, the resurrection capability repaired and restored, and everyone living happily ever after.
Then along came "Gods of the Riverworld". Whatever possessed Farmer to write it is a mystery to me. It is anti-climactic, and has the feeling of being tacked on to the main body of work. It isn't that it is a bad read, it is just that it adds so little, and literally put me to sleep.

The book does not conclude half of the questions which was very prominent in the earlier books, like why are the men circumcised and why can they not grow beards. Caracter also seems to change personalities between the books in the series.

Started reading this in a sf short story compilation . Then was interested enough to start the series. This last book was a good ending to this RIVER WORLD.

Over-the-top (Literally) of the million-mile-long river; new characters. new introduction of previous characters and a virtual plethora (don't you just adore that phrase "Virtual plethora"?) This is actually the final book of the series, actually it is the LAST two, so I won't spoil it for you. Suffive it to say I found it to be a perfect ending. But, then, I rind most endings perfect.

Excellent - a must for PJF fans

I've read and re-read the "main" four titles in the Riverworld series ("To Your Scattered Body Goes", "The Fabulous Riverboat", "The Dark Design" and, last but not least, "The Magic Labyrinth") a couple of times down the years, and was always fascinated by the clean, crisp story and, more to the point, how it gets to where it's going (I'll not give any hints, so as not to spoil what happens next).
The whole series is a romp, and I enjoyed Farmer's mix of characters - his are definitely books where you could side with the good versus the bad. The fourth book "ended" the original series according to Farmer But ..... there was a real cliff-hanger at the end of the "The Magic Labyrinth" and, having read that book again after what must be a 20 year gap, I was intrigued to find I still wanted to know what happened next; a proverbial itch to scratch. I'd not thought about this series since the late 80s, now, with all things internet, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Farmer has added more to the saga. Added in spades, at that, as there is more than just "Gods of Riverworld" to savour.
I try to get most of the books I know I'm going to keep in hardback, because, for me, there's really something different about the tactile experience of reading a hardback. This book came all the way from the US, and doesn't disappoint; mine, inside the dust cover, is lilac with a black spine binding - character from the start! It was in excellent condition, and, if it's been read it shows no signs of wear. Mine feels just as it should. The dust cover is just fine, and shows very few signs of having been moved or used down the years; certainly nothing to detract from the whole experience.
I've just started reading it. Farmer, helpfully, gives a four page outline at the back of the book - he calls it an "Afterword" - I think he made that up! If you've read the other four books at the start of this series, but, like me, it's been a while since you've read all four, then this outline is really useful to get a flavour of "last time in the Riverworld".
I contacted "Daily Deal" (the seller) a couple of weeks after my order was placed to see what was happening, and they very quickly checked my order and said that the short delay was due to it having to be ordered from the US - it turned up 2 days later, so was clearly on its way.
Seriously recommend.
