eventually, I was able to get it together and enjoy the book.
While I liked the book but had a bit of an issue with Scott and Shelly's relationship. It came across as besties forever rather than true love. I didn't understand why he was pining away for so long.
I also thought they seemed a bit younger then what they were. I read it as though they were in their mid -late twenties but they were in their late thirties.
That being said it didn't stop me from liking this book.
A very emotional book. 5 stars for the deep topics, emotional bonding, happy ending and the awareness spread through this book!
A must read for all!!
The characters were amazing and well written. The author did a great job telling the story of it and she has a new dedicated follower in me. I've followed her on all social media and I'm planning on reading more of her work because this was amazing. There were parts in the book that made me upset, parts that made me want to cry out of sadness, and parts that made me want to just cry because the love the characters all had for each other. To me that is a true book, one that can make you go on an emotional roller coaster. Again I highly recommend this book and I praise this author. You my dear are amazing.
After Shelly’s death, her spirit continues to watch over her loved ones as they deal with their grief and loss. Scott’s grief spirals out of control and he even contemplates suicide at one point until Shelly’s father, in an attempt to keep the promise that he’d made to his dying daughter, helps him begin to pick up the pieces of his life. He drags Scott to a grief-management group that he’d been attending himself, which turns out to be the best thing that he could have ever done for his son-in-law.
Scott meets Chris at that very first meeting and their attraction for each other is instantaneous although it takes them quite a while to admit that truth to one another. Chris is also grieving for his sister Jill who had taken her own life. Several set-backs and misunderstandings plague this couple as they begin the long process of healing while they’re trying to get to know each other. It doesn’t help in the least that Scott is an extremely difficult character. Emotionally volatile, he goes from pushing everyone away, to almost unforgivable rudeness to being clingy, whiny and needy. Despite these decidedly undesirable character flaws, his erratic behavior is understandable given his personality traits, life experiences and the soul-deep grief that he suffers from.
Will Chris be able to see the best in Scott despite these flaws? Will he be able to break down the walls that Scott instinctively puts up to shield himself from more hurt? Will they each be able to overcome their grief and learn to live again? Read to find out!
There were so many things that I liked about this story that I’m not even sure where to begin. Usually the first thing that I’ll mention in a review is whether or not the story is well written and this one most definitely is. Excessive typos, stilted or unnatural dialogue or poor sentence structure can really detract from an otherwise good story, but there was little to none of that in Godsend.
Description and characterization are also very important to me as a reader that enjoys being able to visualize the setting and to become emotionally invested in the characters. Ms. Johnson has earned aces all around when it comes to this as well. My heartstrings were definitely tugged from beginning to end with this one and I became teary-eyed on several occasions while reading.
Last but not least, I have to say kudos to Ms. Johnson for being brave enough to take a different approach. I can’t remember ever reading a story quite like this one before. As romance authors, we are hard-pressed to come up with something new and different. There are literally millions of romance stories out there and they seem to always follow the same basic themes, but Godsend is something quite different. This story addresses the sensitive issues of suicide and Dying with Dignity or assisted suicide, and it also takes an in-depth look at the grieving process and the emotional highs and lows which can last for quite some time for many people.
