... that his works sell for gazillions today when he scarcely earned a bent sou from them and depended on his brother for 'charity'? And wouldn't he be still more surprised that people find beauty and serenity in paintings that he daubed on canvas in a frenzy and perceived as expressions of Christian fervor?

Possibly other people don't experience van Gogh's paintings as serene, though surely the 'beauty' is unmistakable. I have large framed reproductions of van Gogh paintings on several walls of my several homes. The painting of his bedroom in Arles, included in this calendar, is among my favorites, and it's on the wall in my own bedroom. Now I can have van Gogh on my desk! Hoe prachtig om te leven vandaag! Comme c'est merveilleux de vivre aujourd'hui!

This calendar is bi-lingual, but the languages are not Dutch and French. Of course they are English and French. The best place in the world to see the paintings of Vincent van Gogh is NOT the "van Gogh Museum" in Amsterdam. It's the "Kröller-Müller Museum" in rural Netherlands; the collection is as good as the Amsterdam museum's and the setting is serene! -- by now, you can guess that I value serenity -- a beautiful designed building in the midst of a forested park. As the Michelin Green Guide will tell you, it's "worth a whole trip".
