I heard this amazing voice and person on NPR's "All Things Considered" in an interview. I was driving to a relative's house to seek safer surroundings and electricity after a tornado. I left my house stressed and tense. Hearing Morris Robinson's interview and the music clips absolutely soothed my soul. Not even an hour after I reached electricity and internet service, I ordered the cd. I received it yesterday. After a day of volunteering at a coworkers severly damaged house, I came home, listened, and my soul was soothed once again. Beautiful voice, moving spirit, wonderful new arrangements on traditional spirituals. Highly recommended.

I had the pleasure of hearing Rigoletto, where the Sparafucile fell ill and was replaced by Morris Robinson. He sang the entire role, plainclothed and from the orchestral pit. The voice BOOMED over everything and had a richness unlike anything I have heard in person (besides in the voice of Ewa Podles).

A few months later, my friends and I were still raving about how his voice had ripped the paint off the theater walls. SO a friend took took me to the Cincinnati May Festival to see his Osmin. In a significantly larger hall the same effect was present. From top to bottom, Morris' voice is a formidable instrument with no apparent weaknesses. In this music, which was created initially to bring joy to those hearing it, his voice is perfectly suited. I'd encourage anyone to purchase this album and if given the opportunity, SEE THIS SINGER IN PERSON.

I enjoyed this recording. Most of these spirituals are very familiar, but Mr. Robinson takes an approach to them that adds a new element to each. Operatically trained, he takes a jazz-influenced approach to many of the songs on this album. The accompaniment is usually guitar and organ. I enjoyed this, as I have not heard spirituals approached in this way. The other songs are performed in an orchestral setting. Mr. Robinson brings a strong bass voice to these songs and accentuates the emotional content very well. Overall, I enjoyed this recording as it was a nice surprise.

Morris Robinson's voice is extraordinary!! If you love Bass Opera voices then this will give you a thrill. Morris sings the Gospel as if it's coming out of the marrow of his bones, He feels every note. He's fairly new to Opera and had a football background believe it or not! I'm sure that Mr.Robinson will be VERY well known in Opera circles in the coming years and I can't wait to hear what he will be singing next! He's a big man with a big voice, but, oh, the subtlety and range this man has will knock your socks off! Think Sam Ramey with a younger timbre.

My dad thinks he can sing and has no inhibitions when trying to hit the normally to-high-for-his-range notes in most music. Morris Robinson's Going Home not only brought to my dad the voice of an all-time great bass and one of the most electrifying contemporary opera singer, it also gave him a wonderful selection of recordings to which he could comfortably carry a tune.

Morris robinson has such potential. If you like powerful bass singing, you cannot help but find this man compelling. You could only write a negative review if you felt that no artist ever evolves, improves, or changes. Let's consider Paul Robeson- like Robinson, he was a big, commanding presence; football player in college (All American Rutgers),a singing talent forged more in the church than in a musical conservatory. His early work was recorded with minimalist accompaniment. I am persuaded that much of the glitzy background we hear nowadays is done to cover up deficiencies in the performer's voice. Robinson and Robeson both shine with instrumental support that is just barely above acapella.
While I doubt that most artists read these reviews of themselves, I would have one hope for Morris Robinson: Stick to the lower registers and don't let some studio twit try to turn you into a baritone. You can retain feeling, control and power in 'deep water', which is a rare talent. Josh Groban can do what most baritones cannot do, yet some of his recent recordings suggest someone wants him to become just another tenor.

Morris Robinson's voice is swoon-worthy: so rich, resonant and true that this listener got cold chills listening to it for the first time. His pitch is always bang-on, he possesses an awesome breadth of expression and dynamics, and it is with regret that one hears the last note end. This CD was a gift from a friend, and I cannot WAIT to hear Mr. Robinson's operatic roles. That said, this collection of spirituals and gospel songs is superb. The arrangements vary from simple to a bit over-the-top, but they are all enjoyable, and with accompanying musicians like Cyrus Chestnut, who could go wrong? Highly recommended for lovers of this music and of beautiful male singing.
