Going Shopping Hardcover – Picture Book, October 1, 2008

4.9 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

Going Shopping portrays one of the most familiar family activities: the trip to the supermarket. Readers follow Mum, her two young daughters, and the family dog as they pile into the car, drive to the grocery, and do the weekly shopping. As in all her books, Garland’s talent for observation turns a mundane experience into an occasion for fun. The minimal text serves as a starting point for Garland’s witty, wonderfully detailed illustrations that engage and delight readers of all ages.

This is a simple story about going shopping. The illustrations are very sweet & realistic. The mom is priceless, as any parent who has gone shopping with children can relate to her expressions. The dog was always a favorite with my kids.

Mum needs to get her grocery shopping done with her toddler and baby in tow. Not to miss out on a good car ride, the family dog also comes along. In and out of the car, making lots of choices to fill up the grocery cart, lugging kit and caboodle to the car, and in and out of the car again. It is no wonder that Mum looks so frazzled when they arrive back home. This delightful book introduces pre-schoolers to the idea that consumers make choices. It also does a marvelous job in featuring a mother who multi-tasks with determination, patience, and humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple stories but so much fun!

Sarah Garland excels in making real life stories for toddlers. This is the simplest plot - mum is taking her child and baby to the shops, something every toddler has experienced. She doesn't make the experience too wonderful, it can be a bit trying, but also exciting too. Her delight is that there is always something new to be discovered in the familiar and her books are well worth purchasing. Great series!
