There are a few people who become terrified going over a lofty highway cut into a rocky cliff. They may be excused for not wanting to cross Glacier National Park on the Going-to-the-Sun Highway. For everyone else, it is an experience not to be missed. The mountain scenery is unsurpassed. It is as close to the wild that one gets while traveling a paved highway. The hikes, whether long or short, are immensely rewarding. Geologists go wild over the fact that an overthrust gave us massive sedimentary mountains on top of younger formations. The wildflowers are spectacular; as are the waterfalls and lakes. The naturalists are wonderfully helpful and their presentations always interesting. On top of all that, the highway is an engineering marvel.

I crossed Glacier National Park for the first time in 1962. Since then, I have seen it throughout the approximately four month season when snow does not block the Going-to-the-Sun. Each trip I see different aspects of Glacier and become more fascinated with its natural history. I enjoy noticing the changes that have occurred. Even the melting glaciers and increasing wildfire damage brought on by global warming reveal new and interesting aspects.

Always there is The Road. Indeed, its very existence is an amazing thing. The story of its construction is fascinating. This little book by C.W. Guthrie tells the story in words and pictures. She does it succinctly and thoroughly. She sets the historical background and follows the construction throughout the highway's 50 mile length. Its birth dates from 1911 to 1933 and it continues to change year by year. The initial sections were built with the muscles of humans, horses, and mules.

This is a beautiful coffee table book. Tons of beautiful pictures taken along Going To The Sun Road. There is also amazing information on how the road was built which is amazing given the difficult terrain and the era in which it was built. I have traveled this road in northwestern Montana and the book serves as a preservation of great memories of that trip.

I love this book - have been giving it as presents to family and friends. All the details of the story make the building of the "Going to the Sun Road" really come alive. I first purchased it thinking it would be a small "coffee table book" and a help to the trip we were planning to make to Glacier National Park (great trip, by the way) - but the book is so much more than I expected. It is a "can't put it down" story as well as a great source of facts and historic information. Highly recommended.

Amazing that this road was constructed in this environment using the equipment available and permitted by the Park Service at the time. Excellent pictures.

From a retired highway engineer.

Nice book, interesting history of the creation of an amazing road through a wondrous national park. We drove this road in July of this year while on vacation and could not believe how it was ever made! It cuts right through the heart of Glacier National Park with jaw dropping views at every twist and turn.

Going to the Sun Road starts from the beginning of the dream to build the road the planning the surveying and the actual construction from start to finish. The book tells of the many obstacles they had to overcome to build this magnificent byway to the Heavens. The ingenuity of the men building the road to figure ways to complete the road using the raw materials on site to make the blend in with the awesome scenery. I enjoyed the book so much when I started reading it I couldn't put it down until I was through.

First of all, put the book down and go to Glacier.

I bought this for my mom. We went on a family vacation here earlier this year and then she went in for major surgery and I put together a basket of 'goodies' for her and put this in. She loved reading about it the history and seeing the photos of where we'd just been.

I rode GTTS highway this past summer on a motorcycle and it was an indescribable experience. The incredible engineering and bravery of the men who made it possible are awe inspiring. The author does a wonderful job describing the origin of the road and the hardships endured and overcome in its construction. There is a generous number of historic and contemporary photos. It comes as close as any book can towards a sense of the grandeur one experiences on the 50 miles of jaw dropping (and sometimes heart pounding) thrill of this remarkable place.
