Going Solo is filled with numerous philosophies, strategies, practical advice, and ideas from many different sources and illustrated with the real-life stories of single parents who have children with disabilities. This book realistically provides information, encouragement, and hope. It does not "sugarcoat" things. The reader is able to pick and choose those things which might be helpful in a particular situation. While this book pertains to single parents, I believe much of the information contained within it will apply to an array of people.

I am a retired special education teacher. During my teaching career, I would often seek practical and useful resources to share with the parents of my students. I looked for things that were easy-to-understand and could be utilized right away. I wish that this book would have been written sooner, so that I would have had another valuable resource to share with parents. In fact, I believe so much in the value of this book that I have given several copies of it to parents with whom I have remained in contact.

This book is a survivor tool as well as a great inspiration for anyone who is raising or has raised a child with a disability. In the book, Dr. Marshak shares insiteful information that can help with just about every situation faced by a parent of a child with a disability. There are real-life examples from those whom Dr. Marshak interviewed for the book - proof that the information comes from studying those who have experienced life scenarios of the very topic of the book. Advice: Purchase the hard copy as opposed to ebook or a library loaner because you will want [and need] to refer back to certain passages again and again, kind of like 'The Bible of parenting.'

Laura Marshak is a savior and helped me tremendously in a horrible time of need. The book is awesome and very helpful - and I have recommended it to as many people as I possible can. This "single with disabilities" group is small and limited in my experience and it's nice to have a resource like this, but more importantly, someone who understands our needs/trials, etc.
