There aren't many girl groups past or present that can even begin to live up to the legacy of The Supremes. Through a period of 16 years (1961-1977) and many different line-ups, they managed a long string of massive hits all over the world, including 12 US number one singles, all of which are featured on this CD. "Gold" gives fans and new listeners a chance to hear the very best of the worlds best girl group.

The first CD features all the hits from 1963-1967, featuring the classic line-up of Diana Ross on lead, backed by Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. The massive hits such as "Baby Love", "Where Did Our Love Go?", "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Stop! In The Name Of Love" all sound brilliant here - digitally remastered and in great quality. However, there are also some hidden gems worth checking out, particularly "Ask Any Girl" (the B-side to "Baby Love") and "Everything Is Good About You", which could have easily been a single in it's own right.

Moving on to the second disc and it begins with some of the later Diana Ross-era tracks (after Florence Ballard had been replaced by Cindy Birdsong in the line-up). The songs here are more soulful than the earlier pop hits, such as "Reflections" and "Forever Came Today". Some songs such as "Love Child" and "I'm Livin' In Shame" are social commentaries of the time.

Finally, the second disc gives the listener the chance to hear some of the post-Diana hits.

In 1970, Diana left and was replaced on lead by Jean Terrell. Some of the songs from this period are some of the Supremes' all time best. Jean's soulful voice really livens up excellent songs, such as "Stoned Love", "Nathan Jones", "Floy Joy" and "Up The Ladder To The Roof" (all UK top 10 hits), as well as a brilliant cover of "Love Train".

I love the Gold series. They are low priced and feature loads of tracks, interspersing big hits with B-sides.

This Supremes compilation is no exception. It features all the number one hits, plus some B-sides, and features a number of tracks from the post-Diana Supremes, which is always a treat because the 70s Supremes had some great songs.

The liner notes are fantastic, and feature some rare photos.

I highly recommend this compilation if you're looking for a fairly priced collection of Supremes hits.

Disc One is actually "Diana Ross & The Supremes Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2" from 1967 and Disc Two is 1970's "Greatest Hits, Volume 3" plus the Ross-less Supremes collection "At Their Best", the latter alone being previously unavailable on CD. It's nice to have all the hits with and without Diana Ross in one great-sounding package, but true afficianados will prefer "Antholgy", which better showcases the Supremes' range by including non-hits, several fine album tracks, and more.

Gold by The Supremes can be considered the ultimate and definitive collection. The set contains three of their greatest hits albums namely - Diana Ross & The Supremes Greatest Hits, Vol 3 and The Supremes At Their Best.

The first two hits packages contain the most famous songs - Stop! In The Name Of Love, You Can't Hurry Love and Reflections. It's The Supremes At Their Best that's more underrated and represents a shift towards a more 70s sound. There's Nathan Jones - covered by all girl Brit gang Bananarama. I really enjoyed The Sha La Bandit, You're My Driving Wheel, Bad Weather and Love Train.

There's also a bonus track I'm Gonna make You Love Me - a collaboration with The Temptations.

The booklet features the original album covers, retro photos and chart positions. The great sound quality makes this a worthwhile and essential purchase!

I have circled this release for a little while now and the clincher for purchasing it is that what looks like a compilation is in fact an omnibus edition of the entire Greatest Hits LPs released while The Supremes were in action (whether with Lady Supreme Diana Ross, or the equally Sparkling Supremes line up post Miss. Ross).

Here you have;
1967 The Supremes Greatest Hits (referred to as Vols. 1&2)
1970 Greatest Hits Volume 3
1978 At Their Best

I have collected most of the Supremes back catalogue (often by hook or by crook) and although the Anthology (which is strong purchase in conjunction with Gold) is a fabulous collection that covers the diversity of the groups work over the two decades , this CD release is a clean & decisive track list of the great hits & near misses (and even these are usually Top 20 hits) of the groups career.

Because as noted the release of the rarer back catalogue is only now beginning to see the light of day through the expanded editions of many Motown gems through Hip-O (with More Hits by The Supremes being given the Royal treatment just before the Holidays), I think this is an important release as it fills a void (especially with the inclusion of the post Diana 'Supremes at Their Best' previously unreleased) where so little of The Supremes back catalogue is available and affordable to own (even the Hip-O releases becoming collector items for the limited release that they are given).

As much as there are the major hits included here there are still a couple of rarer gems that were obviously more recognisable hits at the time, and among my favourites (Run,Run,Run, Ask Any Girl, Whisper You Love Me Boy & There's No Stopping Us Now) some of which I haven't heard since owning the original Double LP.
