Update: I bought a wonderful camping mattress: Klymit Static V Luxe Sleeping Pad, Grey , the same width as the chair bed and it's made all the difference. It inflates by mouth in just a couple minutes, and besides being so comfy it's like sleeping on a cloud, it deflates in seconds and takes up ZERO room when not needed, unlike a foam mattress pad. It's expensive, but worth every penny. I've been sleeping on the two now for over a month with no aches and pains from my dicey back. If you're unfamiliar with these pads, unlike conventional air mattresses that spring a leak in a matter of weeks or months, these are more durable and typically last for years. I have another one, a backpacker's mattress, the Stansport Backpacker's Air Mattress, Brown (19 x 70-Inch) that I take everywhere with me (also heavenly) and I've been sleeping on it for years, but it's only 20" wide. Anyway, with the addition of this marvelous Klymit pad the chair bed is usable, comfortable.
In the pictures posted, the sleeper is in an upright position. I will try to post more later.
