I was able to pick this up while it was free.

It's 2,588 locations, so not too short - it does have a number of old illustrations included which are very nice. The author doesn't just talk about piracy, he starts with the Spanish Conquest to fully explain the circumstances that led to the piracy in the first place, and how the Spanish brought it on themselves. I certainly didn't realize just how one-dimensional the Spanish economy was. It fully depended on plundering the New World. The idea that 1.5 million of the 8 million Spanish were in the government or worked for the Catholic Church is amazing. Of course, the idea that the Pope could just give the New World to Spain is pretty amazing on it's own.

Easy to recommend, and it is worth paying for. Pleasantly surprised.

Does not read like a History Book, more like a story. Gives Just enough information to make you want to research more and also enough not to need to. If you want to know who the Key pirates were that helped settle this hemisphere, how they changed this world and why they became Pirates, this is the perfect book. It does not focus on the murderous intent, but on the motivations that lead to it, all while letting you know the means by which they were driven to commit these acts. I was sorry when the book was completed, but closed it with a new point of view concerning their plight.

This seems to be a fairly well researched story, I found it to be well written and it was the first book of the pirate genre I read and piqued my interest to read more.

Some minor writing errors, but generally well written easy to read. The history is provided with a pretty straightforward and concise timeline, but written in an easy to read manner that did not come off like reading a text book. Enjoyable and quick.
