Three things I love about this story: 1. It’s based on a Hungarian fairy tale, so it’s completely new to me and thus, interesting. 2. I love that instead of a princess sitting around waiting for a handsome prince to rescue her, she does the rescuing! 3. Love this heroine from the get-go. She takes control, even when she has very little, from choosing her own first lover to saving the man she loves’s brother.

This is a fantasy involving sorcerers with ill agendas attempting to use the princess and her now-betrothed to obtain magical items they want. It all starts with a glass mountain and a golden apple and takes us into a dark, eerie magical forest that is a dumping ground for the sorcerers’ spare magic. With nowhere to go, with no one to guide it, the spare magic does bad things, making the forest a dangerous place.

At times I had questions, like, “If you can manipulate this to your will, why not just make the cat normal size or do this or that…?” But more often than not my questions ended up answered. I can’t say much more about that without giving away cool happenings that occur.

But I love how this princess never gives up and strives to save the man she loves and though afraid, she manages to think and act in the heat of the moment. I wish American princesses were like this. It would make an excellent role model.

Much applause to the author’s imagination. I never would have thought of these cool creatures and happenings. The writing is superb: perfect balance of description, detail, character development. When the magic appeared in the forest, I would get tingles of fright and sometimes hold my breath.

Quibble: The story ended abruptly, leaving loose ends: a war started, a missing brother, a magical device in the wrong hands. It just ended.

The Way I See It

Okay so I’m going to be a bit brutal when I say this but…I’m not sure why I was so drawn to this book, but I was. It is based on a fairy tale but the author points out that it is very loosely based on said fairy tale. Being familiar with the fairytale I’d say I totally agree. the premise was unique and it held a lot of potential. Well, have you ever heard anyone say the proof is in the pudding? Sadly there's stuff in the pudding alright, but the evidence is not very great. I loved, loved, loved, this story while Rane and Kayla were together, but when they split up I was pretty disappointed. There isn't a cliffhanger ending but there is also zero resolution. I love book series, I enjoy reading all of the great details. I know all of the secrets don’t get revealed till the very end, but I like to see some progress. Unfortunately Rane and Kayla are left back at square one and to me it felt like every sacrifice they made was for naught.

T-ournament, many have come from afar to prove their worth to the fine princess.
H-ealing, Kayla finds herself knocking on deaths door yet a magical tool will bring her back from the darkness.
E-nchantment, Kayla must set out with her betrothed and arch nemesis otherwise their sanity could be at risk.

G-rave, Rane has made a huge mistake but there is nothing else he could've done. His brother is the one on the line.
O-pportunity, Kayla has always had a strong will and she does not shy away from danger.
L-inger, wild magic is everywhere it seems to have found Kayla and Rane.
D-esperation, under their enchantment they must finish their quest, nothing else matters.
E-scape, more than once Kayla and Rane are faced with danger they will do what it takes to protect each other.

The first book in the new fantasy romance Dark Forest series is a thrilling and magical read that takes the reader on the adventure of a lifetime. Bound together by enchantment, forced to do the bidding of an evil sorcerer, Rane and Kayla venture into the deep, dark forest together…their fates entwined.

This fast paced plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense, action, drama, magic and romance. The author brings this fascinating world to life with well written scenes that inspire vivid images that capture the imagination and the well orchestrated action and magical scenes are believable and draw the reader deeper into the story. The tension builds throughout as the reader joins Rane and Kayla on the journey of their lives and the danger escalates as unknown magic surrounds them. The strong bewitching characters are easily related to and have the reader wanting to know more as they charm the reader with their stories.

The attraction between Rane and Kayla radiates heat from every page, but the relationship is slow building as they start off on the wrong foot and then things become even more complicated when they are bound by the enchantment. Kayla wants to save her kingdom and Rane wants to save his brother, both motivations are certainly understandable, but they will have to learn to work together if they hope to defeat the evil sorcerer which means in the meantime sparks and tempers fly between these two ensuring the reader’s entertainment.

The author spices things up with some surprising twists that the reader doesn’t see coming and Kayla learns secrets about herself that adds more depth to the story. The magical aspect of the story is a refreshingly different and interesting concept and along with the captivating characters makes for a very enjoyable and mesmerizing tale that I couldn’t put down and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
