Disturbing in the most riveting, fascinating way. You’ll be bound to the pages from start to finish. Golden Boy is the best suspenseful novel I’ve read since Gone Girl—it’s the kind of story that will stay with you, whether you want it to or not.”

Barbara’s letters are at the centre of the story. A pleasant surprise is that in these she comes through as honest and genuine hiding nothing from Aiden. The letters provide a window into her thinking which runs parallel to the unfolding events. Slater has put together a plausible psychological thriller depicting the terrible toll the loss of a child can have on a parent. The descend of Barbara into madness is subtle and plausible. Here, at last, is a well paced thriller, that’s is captivating and entertaining.
Golden by kept me going.Written in the form of missives by a woman who lost her baby who had been conceived under some unclear circumstances. Because it's a first person, unreliable narrator, the reader is truly placed into the mind of this woman as she declines into some wonderfully dark, weird places. Berry, the author, fills this book with "Oh no she didn't" moments, never failing to surprise the reader. Fun and scary at the same time, she makes attempts to be "normal," but the needy obsession to have a child increasingly gnaws at her throughout, and this train wreck of a woman leads to a dramatic climax.
I strongly recommend it - a ton of fun!

Ray Slater Berry has really managed to get into the mindset of a bereaved mother, and the first few pages had me gripped, perfectly portraying the upset and turmoil faced by bereaved parents. I often found myself reading words that echoed my own, which was emotionally difficult but grounded me to the character of Barbara, creating a bond with her. Reading, I wanted to be behind her and wanted Barbara to be alright before watching her fall further into her own rabbit hole.
As I read the book I could see and hear her thoughts and her rationality, and could see her spiralling out of control whilst desperately trying to hold on. I found myself wondering a million questions, not knowing which way she was going to turn and how she would make it through.
This novel is totally original which had me glued to the pages and is one I could easily read again and again; as I know I will uncover more about her the more I read, it is truly fascinating.
Ray Slater Berry, I commend you on an excellent book. I cannot wait to see what he does with his next novel!!
If you are in a book club this is the book you should all read next. Can’t wait for the book to be made into a film!
