Right, so it was 2004, and Modest Mouse were in the charts with "Float On" and "Ocean Breathes Salty". Before then, I don't think I was really aware of them. Since then, I have bought up their studio albums. Isaac Brock is a bit of a mad genius. Somewhere between David Byrne and David Byrne. Except Modest Mouse doesn't quite have the polyrhythmic African beats that Talking Heads did.

I went back and listened to all the albums again, and changed my mind about them in some ways. I like "The Golden Casket", but at the same time felt it was lacking. I mean I enjoyed "F--k Your Acid Trip", "We Are Between", "Walking and Running", "The Sun Hasn't Left", "Leave a Light On" and "Back to the Middle", but the other songs such as "We're Lucky", "Lace Your Shoes", "Never F--k a Spider on the Fly", and "Japanese Trees" just missed being as good. Lastly, "Wooden Soldiers" and "Transmitting Receiving" struck me as the two weakest entries.

That's just it, I have felt every Modest Mouse album, more or less, has been like this. Still waiting for that classic album, so it seems will have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime, this will suffice. Three and a Half Stars for almost being a good album, but not quite managing to pull it off.

In this album Brock brings some new ideas to his wonderfully idiosyncratic approach to music. The album is calmer (including a song for his young kids that is as close to a lullaby as Brock will ever get), with a more traditional rock-n-roll use of instruments. Lyrics are clever, as they always are. After my first listen of the CD, my reaction was lukewarm - it is a different sound. But a couple weeks have passed, and I've listened to the CD a few times, and now I crave its music. I find that the album engages mind and soul as well as the many MM CDs that came before it, it just does it in a different way, one that does not shout in your face, but sneaks up on you.

On first listen there were 2 songs (Lace Your Shoes and NFASOTF) that I wanted to listen to on repeat. Eventually I moved on and fell in love with Wooden Soldiers. Today I discovered Back To The Middle. To be fair, I am a big MM fan and there are a few songs that don’t do it for me. I wish it had more of Isaac’s deep thoughts and word play, more yelling, F-bombs, and “slow, fast, slow”. But this is good album and I’m sure I will discover more to love as I continue to listen.

This is a great release from modest mouse. Every tries to judge a bands growth negatively. Ultimately this release is very similar with previous modest mouse albums they mash multiple genres. I wish the album was a tad longer. Very coherent release that can easily be listened to time and time again. Isaac Brock shows he can still sing and write. The band shows they can jam. Cannot wait to see this live. I ordered the package with the shirt. The shirt is great and very high quality!

For as long as it has taken this band to release their last two albums, it's extremely disappointing they have turned out to be easily the worst in the band's discography. "We are Between" is the most listenable track here. I can appreciate the band branching out musically, but even that was done poorly in my opinion. This might be my final purchase of a Modest Mouse cd ever, unless they get back on track in another six or so years when they release their next album.

Zumindest kann man sicherlich nicht behaupten, dass die US-amerikanische Band Modest Mouse ihre Alben allzu überstürzt veröffentlichen würde. Vergingen zwischen dem Erscheinen von „We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank“ und „Strangers To Ourselves“ noch acht Jahre, so dauerte es nun immerhin „nur“ noch sechs Jahre, bis das siebte offizielle Album der Band mit dem Titel „The Golden Casket“ auf dem Plattenlabel Epic Records veröffentlicht wurde.

Kaum zu glauben, doch im nächsten Jahr feiern Modest Mouse bereits ihren 30. Band-Geburtstag. Mit dem eher rauen Independent Rock ihres Debuts „This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About“ aus dem Jahr 1996 hat die Musik von Modest Mouse inzwischen kaum mehr etwas gemein. Sehr viel eher hört man auf „The Golden Casket“ Parallelen zu jener Musik, die auf den Alben „Good News For People Who Love Bad News“ aus dem Jahr 2004 und dem bereits erwähnten „We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank“ aus dem Jahr 2007 zu hören war.

Es sind einmal mehr diese eingängigen Melodien in Verbindung zu dem unverwechselbaren und leicht schrägen Gesang des Isaac Brock, die die Musik von Modest Mouse bestimmen und dominieren und dadurch eben auch insgesamt unverwechselbar werden lassen. Das Zuhören macht Spaß, die Melodien gehen zum Teil bereits beim ersten Mal des Hörens ins Ohr, mit jedem weiteren Durchlauf klingen sie noch intensiver und gelungener. Die Grundstimmung auf „The Golden Casket“ ist eine positive, optimistische. Zwar macht sich Isaac Brock mit seinen Texten immer noch viele Gedanken über diese Welt, er singt über Drogen und über seine Sorge bezüglich des rasanten technologischen Fortschritts in unserer Welt. Gleichzeitig freut er sich jedoch auch auf die Zukunft und die gemeinsame Zeit mit seinen inzwischen geborenen Kindern. So dringt das Zaudernde, das Ängstliche lediglich in die Texte auf „The Golden Casket“ ein, die Musik selbst scheint davon weniger beeinflusst zu sein, denn diese klingt deutlich optimistischer als manch dazugehörender Text.

Und was befindet sich nun als Höhepunkt in diesem goldenen Sarg, was „The Golden Casket“ auf Deutsch bedeutet? Nun, da haben es mir vor allen Dingen die beiden Titel „Wooden Soldiers“ und „Transmitting Receiving“ angetan. Reine Geschmackssache, sicherlich, doch bei diesen beiden Liedern kommen für mich die Zutaten der Musik von Modest Mouse so wunderbar zutage. Musik die anders klingt, leicht verschroben und irgendwie besonders.

Fazit: Mit „The Golden Casket“ ist Modest Mouse einmal mehr ein überzeugendes Album gelungen. Dieses wächst mit jedem weiteren Anhören und enthält, die für diese Band so typischen Zutaten. Leicht schräger Gesang und in Verbindung zu eingängigen und trotzdem zum Teil skurrilen Melodien einen unverwechselbaren Klang. Modest Mouse Fans dürfte das Gehörte gefallen und all denjenigen, die auch mal abseits der Radiodauerschleifen Musik hören ebenso.
