The other beauty is Rue, the sorceress's real daughter, imprisoned for years in a magic tower by a wizard who once sensed thoughtlessness in Melisande and decided to teach her a hard lesson. As Rapunzel matures, her increasing ability to see into people's hearts allows her to discern the other girl's presence in Melisande's heart. When growing unrest results in suspicion directed toward the sorceress, she and Rapunzel, now 16, must flee from their farm, accompanied by a tinker and his boy, an orphan named Harry. Melisande takes them to the tower where she hopes Rapunzel will figure out how to save Rue, and the result is a happily-ever-after ending for all. The Once Upon a Time series is beyond great. They’re not hard to read books, so they go by pretty quickly but the stories are marvelous. I love the twist on Rapunzel. It’s a great read for sure. You won’t be disappointed with this book or any other book you choose in the “series.” Perfect gift for any budding reader in junior high-college or beyond. I’ve started buying them to have them in my personal library because I enjoyed them so much.

I read this book because my daughter was reading it and needed help with the project due when she was finished. I must say the spin on this story was really good. I enjoyed it as much as she did. It was full of good life lessons. Also enjoyed the ending ~which I will not explain why because I loathe it when people give away hints or down right tell you things about a book! But I definitely recommend this read!

I admit I expected something a little different in this retelling. Something light-hearted and humorous (we did get a good amount of humor), but what I didn't expect was the more serious tone, the exploration of the heart and its need to be loved unconditionally. The romance was indescribably adorable, and I nearly teared up in a few parts. I HIGHLY recommend all of Cameron Dokey's works in this series!

I am giving this five stars. There are a few small things I could pick on, such as over-stating themes, but I don't think they matter as I enjoyed this story a great deal. A very interesting, original and compelling take on Rapunzel with strong characterisation. You may not receive the edition photographed; I didn't, but in this case I didn't mind as Dokey's other works are available in the edition I did receive. I am finding her Once Upon a Time books very addictive, and intend to read her works first before moving on to books in the same series by other authors.
