I have been an avid fan of Sheila Mary Taylor for many years now, and I have read many of her books.
And this one did not disappoint. It captured my attention from the outset. I loved the way it was written from multiple perspectives, which is often not my preference. It was imperative in this story though, so the reader can learn all the facets of the complexities of the story, and how all the back stories, feed to the present day narrative.
Old Dan is dead, but his legacy is what brings the past to the present, and ignites new friendships and relationships, the web that was woven over many years is about to be unspun, as we meet all the characters who were connected to his life, and his secrets. The resting place of the golden sapphires, only one of them.
The characters are so intricately portrayed, each comes alive on the page, from their vivid descriptions and their genuine interactions with each other. Samantha is a strong and vibrant MC, and Mark as the young eager, nephew from England is a real and true gentlemen, who is a perfect counterpart to match Sam's dynamic personality and her passion for saving the mining industry.
Now add the backdrop of rural Australia adding that extra element of the savage wilderness that is part of the mining culture. There are no cliché's in this read, where assumptions rule over the precious landscape, it is authentic in every way.
The true gem though, is the blend of all these elements to make this an absorbing, intense, and intriguing tale, that grabs you and doesn't let you go till you finish the final page, when all is revealed to leave you sighing, that long satisfied sigh, that is the true tell of a great read. Highly recommended
When it comes to story telling, Sheila Mary Taylor is one of the best. Romantic, gritty and gripping, it kept me reading from the first page to the last. I was reluctant to put it down once I had finished it. It is a story that lingers in memory, a story that I will warmly remember for a long time.
I loved the authentic setting and the dynamics between the main characters, widowed Sam, and Mark who arrives from England.
As the author gradually reveals the secrets of 'Old Dan' and the golden sapphire of the title, the story and the relationship between Sam and Mark develops. I won't spoil the ending but suffice to say it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
