Purchase options and add-ons
Goldmine's Essential Guide to Record Collecting celebrates some of the finest vinyl ever pressed by music’s greatest artists. You'll find the royalty of Rock (Elvis, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones), the pioneers of Punk (The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones), Motown's movers and shakers (Berry Gordy, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight), Jazz kings (Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon), Disco queens (Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Deniece Williams), the first couple of Folk (Joan Baez and Bob Dylan), and a host of others from Psychedelia, Classical and the Eighties.
Filled with record art, concert posters and artist profiles, as well as lists and values of the best rarities, 45s, 78s and albums from across the musical spectrum, Goldmine's Essential Guide to Record Colleting isn't the reason you'll love vinyl. But it just might be the reason your love affair will last.

I'm a collector, although not fanatical, and most of the information in this book will be known by current collectors, but I did really enjoy reading through even though there was little "new" in the book. However, for someone getting started with record collecting, or looking for more info about specific eras and collectable records of particular genres, this is a useful and informative book. In fact, this is probably the best all-round book on vinyl collecting that I know of, and I have a large library on the subject.
There's deeper dives on some of the important artists (Presley, Beatles, Stones, etc) and genres (folk, classical, jazz, etc) including the collectables for each, while putting them in their context. The brief profiles of artists are nicely done, as is the analysis of the most collectable records for each. The book is heavily illustrated, which adds to the reading experience. This book is not a deep dive into any specific subject, but an overview with some more detailed examination of some artists, but it remains one of the best overviews of collectables and collectors I know of. A very nice read!
