Addendum: So, I have had the replacement for several weeks and used it probably ten times. Once you master the arcane button sequences, there's a good chance it will work, and when it does, it is exactly what I need, unobtrusive and accurate. Unfortunately, today was not an uncommon experience. Fully charged it last night (worked well yesterday), and today, it just kind of died - wouldn't do anything. This is actually hard to determine as there are no visual signals to let you know if it is acquiring your location etc. The manual indicates that the flashing diodes will do this, but I find them only occasionally accurate. So you don't know whether it is still secretly trying to find out where you are, or just napping. Today, it snapped on just as I pulled into my garage, informing me I was 980 yards from the pin. Great. The good news is that I have learned to trust my own judgement on distance and club selection a lot more, and probably have become a better golfer. But, I don't play for money, and if distance is really important for you, this device is probably not ideal. Being a gadget guy, I'm not going to take it back again, but try to understand its eccentricities better. Please know I am not a web troll who likes to trash things, and I truly had (have!) high hopes for this thing. I may ever order the colored bands they offer - what the hey! Meanwhile, consider your needs and your patience carefully before purchasing.
As for the way it works, it's not as intuitive as I think it could be. The last thing I want to do is fiddle with this while I'm out trying to enjoy a leisurely game of golf. However, that just might be me getting irritated that I have allowed technology to interfere with my game. The screen is fairly easy to read and the GolfBuddy does do what it say it will do, but not without some hiccups here and there. Such is the way of technology, though.
I like it, but I will probably not use it much. I feel like I would rather spend my time actually enjoying playing the game rather than being engrossed in trying to get some tech gadget to work properly. It can get a little frustrating which is actually the kind of thing I am trying to get away from when I'm out playing. For someone who is more technologically savvy than I am, this might be a great thing to have. But I like simplicity. Especialy when I'm out trying to relax and enjoy myself.
I took it out on the course and switched the setting to GOLF and held the OK button until the little orange dot in the corner began to flash indicating it was search for the satellite. Then it flashed a magnifying glass and a strange polygon which I believe means that it's downloading course data, or looking for the course. After a few minutes it found us and we began. The information is pretty accurate, it tells you the yardage to the pin and the par of the course. This information was readily available at the tee box however. On the course it updates automatically where you are, which is nice and what I was looking for.
To determine the length of your shot, you need to press the OK button to bring up GOLF Mode, then press and hold the left arrow button to tag your location, then hit your ball, then go to your ball and press the OK button to bring up GOLF Mode, then press and hold the left arrow button to see your distance. This is a nice feature, but outlines my reservations about this device, which I will go into after I go over the additional features.
The Pedometer is accurate. However, it only tracks up to 10,000 steps so it won't be replacing your FitBit anytime soon and if you plan on walking the course instead of using a cart, you'll be well over your 10k.
The watch function is fine, you can choose between 12H and 24H formats. You'll need to be connected to a satellite and update your time zone to set it.
I like the sleek unassuming design and the LEDs are bright enough to easily read even in direct sunlight. The battery life is quite remarkable, I had barely made a dent in it after a full 18 holes.
However, the UI is abysmal. I have a background in interactive design and the mark of a well designed interface is that it can be navigated without a manual. If you handed this device to someone, they would have virtually no idea how to work it even if they knew what it did. I found myself forgetting how to use some of the functions while out on the course even after I had read the manual. The archaic LED shapes and queues offer little in the way of hints as to how to proceed. Each feature requires several button presses as you stumble through the "menus".
While the device does deliver on the functions it promises with accuracy, it does so in such a befuddled manner that I would rather just work on my - technology-free - "golfer's intuition" than be bothered to operate this device while playing a round. The price tag does not justify the lack of feature set and minimalist interface. I think Deca International has a decent prototype here, but needs to seriously build out the device with the user experience in mind.
