Product Description

Product Description

Merriam Webster's Befudiom® word game is the exciting game of wacky everyday phrases that's fun for the whole family! You'll have a blast as you draw, act, shout and spell to help your team guess the phrase. Each clue is an idiom, a phrase we use everyday that doesn't really make much sense when taken literally. Divide into teams of two or more and roll the dice to pick your idiom and how you'll express it. Get creative as you act out "chip off the old block" or show off your artistic side when you draw "wolf in sheep's clothing." Describing "asleep at the wheel" might seem easy, but can your team guess with just a few letters as clues? It's all part of the fun! Everyone will love this game of mixed-up meanings where everything is easier said than done!

From the Manufacturer

Try to act out "sell you down the river," or even get someone to guess "getting your bell rung" without using any of the words in the expression. Everyone will love this game of mixed-up meanings where everything is easier said than done. The game includes 2100 different expressions and is for ages 13 and up.

I love this game. The combination of charades, clue, pictionary and more rolled up into one game! You can't help but have fun and laugh at the antics and fun challenges to communicate idioms. You can play with a few people or many, holidays or not. Great for all ages, this can even bring teenagers back to fun family times. A great gift you would have a hard time giving away if you did not have one of your own! I even use this game to teach these handy idioms to English learners from different countries. I'd give it 6 stars if possible.

You may not be aware of the history of this game, but it's quite interesting. Wendy Hampton and her ten-year-old daughter Wendy are the authors of this game. They created it on their living room floor, and were featured on the PBS show Everyday Einsteins.

So, what IS this game? It's like Charades, but not quite. Basically, players take turn acting out, drawing, or otherwise hinting at an idiomatic phrase -- which their teammates much guess. Players end up representing in "literal" gestures, sketches, etc. English phrases which have a primarily metaphorical meaning. For example, "Go take a hike." How do you represent that? That's the challenge of the game.

There are several kinds of play in each game. The role of a specially-designed die determines what kind of "cluemaking" the player must do -- charades, written clues, Pictionary-style, etc.

It's loads of fun. Highly recommended fans of Charades, Pictionary, Celebrities, Scattergories, Taboo, etc. If you like the lateral, creative thinking that this game requires, also check out Dixit. I'd also recommend THE Book of Word Games: Parlett's Guide to 150 Great and Quick-to-Learn Word Games.

Easy to learn, fun for most ages. We played in teams and it was certainly more geared toward the teens/adults than the younger groups just becuase you have to know "sayings" or slang in many cases. A fun family game option though and allowed the young kids to participate more than some of the other games we've played-

My family loves this game! We've played it on multiple occasions and I finally bought one for myself. Love all the different ways of having to share clues, and learning what the different idioms mean is fun too.

We purchased this game to play as a family. As homeschoolers we are always on the lookout for new and fun ways to learn. My 9 year old had a tough time with understanding what a lot of the idioms meant, which was actually perfect because he was learning. We changed the rules a bit to make it easier for him to play. My 14 year old high functioning autistic boy loves this game. Idioms are hard for him to grasp, but he enjoys learning them. Once he understood what the idiom meant, he would then have to portray it to the rest of his team, either by drawing, acting, or speaking. What great practice for him to read other people as to whether or not they are 'on the same page' as he is. It really is great as a tool for teaching idioms and for learning to really express yourself in very specific ways. Both kids now beg to play this game!

This is a great family game if you have bigger kids. It's all based on idioms/cliches, so it would be hard for smaller kids or people who speak English as a 2nd language, but it's great fun for everyone else.

I saw an article about Befudiom in my local newspaper at Christmas-time about the mother & daughter who invented this game. Since I love word games and the English language, I ordered the game to arrive when my daughter & family were visiting. We all had fun with it and the kids learned the meaning of idioms that were unfamiliar to them. Befudiom would be fun for any group because there are various ways to play with diverse age groups. Love it!

This game is a lot of fun with a big group of adults. We had some good laughs trying to act out and draw some of the idioms. Having a big group helps to keep the game going because sometimes not everyone was familiar with the idiom that they had to guess. Note: I think this game may not be appropriate for kids since they are less likely to know the idioms. I think they would get frustrated quickly.
