Gondra has inherited traits from both her eastern (Asian) dragon dad and western (European) dragon mom and enjoys them all. She's especially happy that she's a combination of both. Cheerful banter and hilariously adorable dragon portrayals present a warm, appealing family portrait. The beautiful and fanciful illustrations are rich in whimsical details that invite repeated readings.

A Conversation with Linda Sue Park and Jennifer Black Reinhardt, author and illustrator of Gondra's Treasure
About that cow...
Linda Sue: There's no cow mentioned in the text of Gondra's Treasure, so when I received the first sketches, I was surprised and delighted to see that Jennifer had drawn Gondra with a stuffed cow lovey. I asked her where she had gotten the idea, and she said...
Jennifer: I knew I wanted a “friend” for Gondra to talk to when she’s sharing her family history. When I was in Belgium, I was sketching for Gondra and saw a little boy in the park. He was dancing through the rain puddles, wearing huge galoshes, and swinging a big, floppy, stuffed cow. For some reason it clicked and was a quirky animal that I thought a little dragon would have. I also knew Gondra would be colorful and I loved the idea of the graphic black and white cow.
Linda Sue: The cow in the sketches was a Holstein. I think. It was white with black blobs on it. Which makes sense, because Holsteins are originally a breed from the Netherlands (I just looked that up), right next door to Belgium. It was a lovely cow, but I had a special request to make. My sister-in-law loves cows and at one time had four Belted Galloways. The last of them had just died; its name was Frisket. I asked Jennifer if she would make Gondra's cow a Belted Galloway in honor of Frisket.
Jennifer: The request was so politely worded and Linda Sue said she would absolutely understand if I didn’t want to change the cow due to graphic reasons. But, of course, I wanted to pay homage to Frisket!
Linda Sue: MOOOOOO!!! (which means THANK YOU, JENNIFER!)

The message conveyed is very positive: it’s okay to be different and to be loved for exactly who you are. This book will definitely work well for reading aloud to children of mixed ethnicity, for readers who love dragons, and for kids who are wondering if they’ll grow up to be more like their dad or their mom and to accept themselves regardless.
I received this product for free in exchange for this review.
Gondra's Treasure is a beautiful children's book with very nice illustrations and with a positive message. The two core messages are appreciating differences (race, gender, culture) and reassuring a child that that they are loved, wanted - treasured as the book puts it. If I were rating only for these things this book would get easily get 5 stars from me.
That being said, there are a ton of children's books in this world. Most are lousy, but there are many that are fun to read and will be read over and over. This is just not that book. This is a book you pull out from time to time maybe to remind your child to appreciate differences or to remind them that they are loved. But this is not a fun read that your child will demand over and over nor is it a book that an adult will enjoy reading for the experience.
I'm giving the book 4 stars because it's a good book with a positive message. It is not, however, a book I would blindly recommend to all parents like, for example, almost anything by Chris Van Dusen.
It's very playful and doesn't feel overly didactic. The cow stuffed toy was also a a big hit, and the gazing ball pearl in the back garden didn't go unnoticed.
The colorful illustrations make me and my 'test reader' smile and grin throughout.
The parents have a sweet and subtle banter going on that is a nice backdrop to their 'mixed marriage.'
At the conclusion of the story, there are a few pages discussing the background of the tales and myths of dragons. It was informative and nice to see since it could answer some questions young readers might ask.
It's not really a story--it's written as a slice-of-life from the viewpoint of a very young dragon. I really enjoy the way the book explores and explains the differences between Eastern dragons and Western ones, and also touches on some very human-relatable experiences with kids taking on traits from each parent. The dragon parents' comments, especially the snarky little comments from the mom to/about the dad are there to add some humor for the adults reading the book, I would imagine. And they are appreciated!
Definitely expect "read it again" requests when you share this book to your children. Luckily, it is worth repeated reads.
