Past Praise for Kirk Russell:
“Readers looking for a superbly crafted, cleverly plotted, highly suspenseful thriller with a larger-than-life hero need look no further than Redback―or, indeed, the entire John Marquez series. Outstanding!” ―Booklist (starred review)
“Russell tackles both action sequences and intractable moral problems with prose as sharp and efficient as a filleting knife.” ―Kirkus Reviews
“Russell has crafted an addictive police procedural on speed, with requisite intricate plotting and a stunning conclusion.” ―Library Journal on Counterfeit Road
“With more twists and turns than Lombard Street, Russell’s complex plot makes for a pulse-pounding police thriller.” ―Library Journal on A Killing in China Basin
“You know as you read this one that you are on to something good. Kirk Russell comes out of the gate with a story brimming with fresh characters and artful prose. Shell Games announces the start of what I think will be a great career.” ―Michael Connelly
“Excellent...a compelling plot, fully realized characters, white-knuckle suspense, and unusual yet accessible settings. What truly sets it apart, though, is Kirk Russell's vigorous, lovely, unadorned prose. Shell Games marks the debut of a substantial new talent in crime fiction.” ―John Lescroart

Grale series. He's been very good for a number of years.
The author, Kirk Russell, has done his research and brought us a complex, imaginative storyline, that is very believable and terrifying. As the author says, “we need to get it together as a country”! This is an awesome and thought-provoking read!
FBI Special Agent and bomb tech Paul Grale is still living in Las Vegas with his now 18 year old niece Julia. After having the rest of her family killed in a bomb blast, Julia is now a pacifist - and she hasn't been making the greatest choices in her personal life.
Grale still works out of the Las Vegas FBI office but goes on temporary duty to Los Angeles. There he gets involved immediately in a series of bombings and shootings of power stations and telecommunications towers. Throw in some cyber warfare and he definitely has his hands full. Plus some of Julia's choices bring her to the attention of the FBI.
This was a chilling book that points out just how susceptible the United States is to attacks on its power and communication grids.
This book seems like something that could really happen. I've read other books that talk about EMP attacks but it seems like the events in this story could be brought about by homegrown terrorists along with terrorists from other countries.
Probably close to a four star, but didn't give me a need to hurry back from an interruption.
No official explanation incorporated into the book for the payment that was supposedly a partial buy-in of the farm. And what about the investments that were ordered to be sold?
