Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Paradise Lot is meant to be consumed like your favorite T.V. show or monthly comic book. My intention is to publish an episode every month or so until the series is done.

Season One - The GoneGod World
Season Two - Keep Evolving
Season Three - Crystal Dreams
Season Four Onwards - TBA

Of course, the road to hell is paved by good intentions... and frankly my intentions aren't that good. Still, we'll see what happens. What I can say is that having written the first six episodes, the world of Paradise Lot is coming to life. There's still a long way to go and these once-immortal creatures are difficult to tame, but we're getting there.

We're getting there.

About the Author

R.E. Vance lives in Edinburgh with his wife, soon to be born child and imaginary dog where he enjoys a beautiful city, whisky and long walks. All he really wants is to quit his job and write stories based in Paradise Lot. All he really hopes for is that his child-to-be is born healthy (ten fingers, ten toes and at least two eyes will do) and that eventually he can can get a real dog so that he can have an excuse to go on even more long walks.

This is definitely a writer to watch. Another commenter has compared him to Neil Gaiman, and I don't think that's off the mark. The ideas in this story will certainly resonate with fans of Gaiman's blend of fantasy and realism.

The story is well thought out and constructed, the ideas are fresh and interesting, and well worth the cover price alone. Character development is excellent so far, though it's sometimes hard to judge given that this is only the first installment. I was especially impressed with how Astarte the succubus was handled. At first I was afraid "she" would turn out to be just another archetypal seductress, but as it turns out Vance has put a lot of thought into this and all the other very unusual characters. The angel Miral is another example where character shines through and is not cliched.

Stylistically, this is a surprisingly good first work. It is definitely not yet another of those sketchy rush-to-kindle efforts we see so much of these days. It's a well-crafted page-turner which will not disappoint. I can't wait for the next installment. Highly recommended!

I admit it, I’m hooked! I’m not normally a great fan of fiction but from the moment I started reading the prologue of this book, I was hooked. R. Vance has managed to draw me into the GoneGodWorld in a way that I would not have thought possible.

As I read through the book, Jean-Luc Matthias led me through the sometimes odd and quite often downright weird happenings in this strange, fascinating and somehow very believable world of angels, minotaurs, HuMans and Others (amongst many). Who else could write a book that includes creatures suffering from self-imposed constipation pains?!! Seriously though, there’s a lot more to this story than that.

Read the book . . . you’ll love it . . . and watch out for the unique and original way that R.Vance asks for a review at the end of this fascinating book!

From Author R.E. Vance comes a compelling story of Gods and “Others” as myth-like creatures come to Earth to try living as mortals. Helped out by the hero of the story, you get to know the creatures as struggling participants cast down to an Earth-like state. I personally thought the story was unique and had enough cool characters to keep it moving through to the end. The author is creating a series apparently [6 parts?] so really looking forward to the other books. A recommended read with solid writing and believable characters!

I'm normally don't take time for such fantasy reading. I believe I will continue to be entertained, since I felt a sadness after the pages stopped and a little frustrated by the tease of these few pages..can't wait for the entire series now. Even told my husband he will love Paradise Lot: GoneGodWorld! Very talented and colorful writing R.E. Vance

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Paradise Lot; its witty, smart and truly entertaining. The characters are very interesting and well developed in terms of their traits & motivations. The plot itself keeps you guessing as what is to happen next and will always surprise and never disappointing. This is a fun and intruding mystery/thriller wrapped in a fantasy setting. A real treat, a must read for thrill seeker. Thank you Vance and keep the books coming!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Paradise Lot and found the author's premise original and clever. The characterization of the Others was well-developed and I really enjoyed the author's interesting take on the archangel Michael.

I was drawn to this book by the small, but interesting cover while browsing for my next fiction read. I've been on a non-fiction kick lately and wanted to break out of my normal thriller/mystery/sometimes fantasy picks. Basically, I wanted to "shake things up". I figured it was only 80 pages, so I wouldn't be wasting much time, if it wasn't good.

Fast-forward two hours later and I was at the "to be continued" page and wanted more! Rewind backwards and you'll find me being pulled into a complex story woven with the delicacy of a dentist trying to suture together a broken hard-boiled egg! From the opening, stressful dream where we first meet human Jean-Luc and begin a twisting, heart-rending funny, mind-bending journey that keeps you wondering what's coming next. You might think you've met Medusa, Astartes and Archangel Michael in other books, but nothing like what r.e. vance has in store for you.

If Timothy Leary were able to coherently write what he saw on one of his 1970s "trips" you might get a smidgeon of what Paradise Lot has in store for you. Imagination, fun, a twist on the "old" and a bit of naughty mixed in for good measure and you have a good idea of this book, but not all of it.

Sure, we have to wait for part 2, but who cares? What a great ride Part 1 has been and I look forward to seeing "the storm" when it makes it's full appearance.

Buy this book, set aside a few hours and jump on to the train to "Paradise Lot". You'll be glad when you do!

I really enjoyed this book, but possibly what I liked most was the protagonist. It's hard to find a flawed but thoroughly engaging main character, yet "Paradise Lot" delivers. Human Jean-Luc Matthias is a great guy, despite struggling with a tragic loss, along with the crazy angels and fairy tale creatures he's taken under his metaphorical wing. He's a sucker for a lame dog, especially when it has a human body.
The world building is another great strength of this story. God has gone and Paradise Lot is now home to an eclectic group of mythical figures that were left behind. The result is a slum where newly mortal angels rub wingtips with minotaurs, gorgons, fairies and the Billy Goats Gruff. Never before have so many ex-immortals struggled so hard with the intricacies of bodily functions and fluids.
This creation is charming and inventive, with plenty of magic to set the imagination on fire. I didn't want it to end, but the next instalment should be out soon. Hallelujah.
