The first part of the story begins with Jess telling Blake that she does not want to do anything with him, but he doesn’t take no for an answer. What kind of a man goes into a woman’s room, uninvited, and sleeps naked next to her? No only that but he gropes her in her sleep and pushes he’s erect penis near her vagina. This is clearly sexual assault. Not only this, but before this incident he kept harassing her via text messages: messaging her when she didn’t want to, sending penis pictures that were unwelcome. What in the world is this?! The more I kept reading, the angrier I became at the characters of Blake. He is one step away From having a sexual harassment complaint written up on him. Seriously, what kind of BS is this?! I’m not just angry as a man but as a person that understands empathy, and that “No!” Means freaking “No!” Not “Keep harassing me and try to convince me.” I am so disappointed in this book.
It all begins at Jamie and Wes’ wedding. Jamie’s sister, Jess Canning, has planned the perfect wedding for her brother. The stress of planning the wedding and making sure everything goes as planned has opened her eyes and made her realize she may have chosen the wrong career path. She doesn’t enjoy being an event planner. This wedding is her last gig and she feels like she is letting her family down. To top it off the best man, Blake Riley, Wes’ NHL teammate, is doing a better job coordinating different aspects of the event than she is. This crass NHL player with no filters has charmed the guests, made miracles happen, and is offering his help to alleviate the stress. The last thing she needs is him helping her destress. That would mean she’s losing her panties and distressing in a very sexy way.
After the big event, Jess finds the courage to start pursuing the career she knows she was meant to do. It means she has to go back to college to become a nurse. Her parents have shelled out enough money for her previous education and career choices. She’s going to do this on her own. She’s landed a scholarship in Toronto. She will be close to Jamie and Wes, as well as Blake Riley, their neighbor and teammate.
Blake offers Jess the support and friendship she needs while trying to fit back into college life and meet the demands of the nursing program. He’s a fun guy to hang out with and has huge shoulders to cry on when things get rough. He also has a huge heart made of gold. There’s more to this guy than sex, fun, and hockey. He’s dedicated to his family and protective of those he cares about. He is even protective of his manipulating ex where his family is concerned. Rather than expose her lies and hurt his family, he keeps his mouth shut. In a desperate effort to deflect the attention, Blake brings Jess home to meet his family. He introduces her as his girlfriend with the hopes that his family will let his past relationship go. Mamma Riley has a big heart and knows her boy is up to something.
After meeting Blake’s family, Jess sees a very different side of Wes. She’s realizing that he is a man with honor. His morals may be spotty, his brand of craziness may be annoying, but his pure heart is completely lovable. Add his love for the furry friends to the mix and his pure dedication and you have the perfect Good Boy.
The moment I opened this book I could not put it down. Blake Riley is larger than life and had me falling hopelessly in love with him. When his family was introduced to the mix I wanted marry him. When he showed all his true colors I wanted to keep him forever. Sarina and Elle have another Stanley Cup winner on their roster. I can’t wait for the next book in the WAGS series. Matt Eriksson has sparked my imagination.
Unfortunately, the heroine's character wasn't as compelling. Other than her good looks, I really couldn't see why Jess could attract someone as wonderful as Blake. I don't think she's a screw-up because she's still trying to find the right career at the age of 26, but I was really turned off with her borrowing money 4 times from her parents. The first couple of times I could see, college and then finding her art history major not getting her a job, borrowing again to start her jewelry making business. Uh, but then there's a 3rd time where she borrows money to help with her wedding planner career which she decides after 4 months isn't for her. And then on the 4th time, she approaches her parents to help her out with a $55k/year nursing school. She knows her parents aren't wealthy (heck they raised 6 kids!) and she knows she's asking yet again for money, but then when her mother blinks at this request, she thinks the other kids wouldn't receive the same reaction. In the end, she finds a cheaper school, although her parents still lend her $10k. She is constantly comments throughout the book about being broke and having to study so hard - I'm not sure if this was supposed to make her seem like the plucky heroine to the reader, but it just made me see her as the all time whiner.
Overall, the writing is good, but the makeup of the heroine was a letdown.

Jess (Jamie's older sister) was not my fave character in US...she was a bit of an airhead, who didn't seem to take anything seriously and had had several career choices...none of which worked out...until she decided her next career move was to hop from party planning to nursing (and a fine job she didn't do of that in Us!!); however, everyone's allowed a second chance (or in her case 6 or so chances), and as taking a nursing course in the US costs gazillions in fees, her cheapest option was going to Toronto and registering there....and couldn't we see that one coming readers??
The one liners in this, and Blake's overall part in the story were wonderful, so funny...laugh out loud funny at times, and well, let's not forget the larger than life personality that is Mama Blakey and her love for her amazing family. We discover why Blake is reluctant to settle down (and who can blame him....Molly, the lying bitch!!), we catch up with Wes and Jamie, the WAGs and the Canning Clan and yes, maybe using kids suffering from cancer as a storyline was pushing things a little, but I have to say that overall this was just the sweetest read. I will keep reading the series as it's Eriksson's story next, and I felt quite sad for him in US...and in this one. 5 'Come On Blakey' stars from me.
Jess Canning is Jamie Canning' s sister (Him) and Ryan Wesley' s sister in law. She is a sassy girl who enjoys life but lately she feels a bit lost. Jess perceives herself as the flighty sibling , but she forges ahead with her new career as a nurse. I loved watching her grow in confidence - and fall in love. Blake Riley is Wes's teammate and good friend and neighbour to both Wes and Jamie. He reminded me of a really enthusiastic puppy who bounds around full of energy and embraces life with everything he has. Blake is a joker, a team player, loyal, sweet, sexy and has something absolutely adorable about him. He and Jess hooked up once. He wants to do it again. She doesn't. Not really. No. But Blake Riley is a persuasive and sexy guy......
Fab characters. Interesting storyline that was deeper than I expected but had me hooked. Some absolutely hilarious laugh out loud moments. Loved, loved, loved it.
For the past 5 years Blake has been used to women throwing themselves at him but not Jess Canning! I loved seeing a softer more vulnerable side to him (where Jess was concerned). And the more time Jess spends with him she realises that there is more to him than what you initially get to see.
This was a funny, sweet & romantic story.
Jess and Blake's journey was such a intense one and there connection was wonderful
I was hooked on good boy from page one I didn't want to put the story down
Jess and Blake's story was such a fun but serious story with a lot of humor
This was a awesome start to what will be a amazing addictive new series
Thank you sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy for this beautiful written story
And "Omigod" I LOVE DYSON!!! He is awesome:
"I'm Blake Riley" I offer.
"Dyson, like the vacuum?"
"That's right." He gives me a sidelong glance
"Want a demonstration?"
"Dyson" Jess snaps. "What did we talk about?"
Everyone needs a dose of Blake Riley in their lives!
As always in Sarina & Elle's books it was full of fun/flirting and was such a great story!
Blake Riley certainly made me smiley all the way through with his one liners while trying to make Jessica see what she really meant to him.
Will continue to one click on all books in this series and already desperate to see who's book is next!
I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
