This book shares personal stories about life in America from the perspectives of German women who have moved here because of husbands, career choices, or simply adventure. As the daughter of a German woman in America, I've grown up with a dual identity and these stories resonate on so many levels. Written mostly in German with some English (and a mash up of the two called "Denglish" or "Germisch") the book literally keeps you in the state that these women find themselves in: German by birth, American by circumstance, and forging a new identity as German Girls Living in America.

My parents are both German immigrants (who arrived separately and met/married in the U.S.) and this book gave me a valuable insight into their experiences. I've passed along several copies to their friends who came over with their husbands and families, and it has resonated with all of them. The chapter about Gudrun had me bawling from the first page because my mom's name is Gudrun too. I'm sure you GGLIA miss her terribly <3 Thank you so much, Uta, for putting this book together, and for the many sequels which I will have to read next! There needs to be a 1st generation GGLIA group for us abstammung von einwanderer!

I too am one of the GGLIA Girls. The GGLIA Girls to me are a blessing. They are always there for me when things are good, when things are bad, to share joys and sorrows. When Uta came up with the idea of writing this book together with all of us, how can you say no?! I loved being part of it. Loved reading the finished product. Laughed and cried along the way. Thank You GGLIA Girls, you all are my special family and I love you guys. You are the best out there. Hope many more people will get go out and purchase this book.It really will give you a insight and it shows the true stories and nothing you would see on tv.

I am one of the GGLIA :) when we all responded to Uta's questions it showed how differnt our expirences have been and point of views. But it also shows how though we all had to be the struggles we have had over the years and still go through. There were times in the book I laughed so hard I was crying and could hardly talk to tell my boyfriend what was so funny. And other times there were heart warming and though stories to read were I need my box of tissue handy. We all wrote it together it's stories from many woman that came into this country and Uta did a wonderful job putting together this way. I bought the book as soon as it came out bought the kindle version for my son and will get it in the kindle version for myself now too :)

So nice to read all the comments and different experiences of our Facebook group GGLIA (German Girls Living in America). The subjects are familiar to everyone who moved to the US, no matter how or when. I sent this book to my mother in Germany and she said she could hardy put it down. Great job Uta Burke

WOW, what a book. I am also one of the girls of GGLIA , which Uta describes in her book. I had my kleenex box ready to read this book of a life that you have to experience to know. But i have to say that Uta put it very nicely together for everybody to understand what we girls are up against and with it. It made me feel, not being alone in this world to feel the way I do and it further gives me the strength to go thru days that are not all that. I hope there will be a second book :)

The book gives you an insight of what it's like to arrive in the USA from a foreign country and in this case , Germany. I am also an immigrant and I can remember some of the thoughts and feelings I experienced as I first arrived in this country. My english was good, due to a previous job where english was a requirement, but some of the stories just made me laugh out loud. I had a few mishaps , when I first started to speak english. The book discribes the difference in mentality very well. Even though I have lived in the US ( off and on) since 1975 and continuously since 1999, I still have some of the "german" customs instilled in me e.g. "quiet hours" or hanging out my clothes to dry.
The book is well written and my daughter who is currently here in the US for vacation from Germany, read the book as well and laughed out loud.

Great job Uta Burke!
