Editorial Reviews

The good feeling you are about to feel is the kind that reaches from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet and all the soul in between. It can only be derived from the collective efforts of jazz players at the peak of their powers assembled and led by the one and only - Christian McBride! The bassist with the mostest hosts an awesome aggregation of players including his own band mate Steve Wilson, multi-reedman Ron Blake, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and his close personal friend, vocalist Melissa Walker. McB arranges and conducts the project which has been a life-long dream of his. They don t call it brass for nothing.

Sorry to read the other negitive review. However we can all have our opinions. The Big Band playing is really superb! This must be one of the most exciting big band CDs in a while. It took me back to McBride in 1994 only on a bigger scale....Highly Recommended and I'm sure there will be a lot more positive words here on amazon soon ;-)

This is a very nice mix of classic and contemporary big band sounds. And the band really swings on all tunes. As for the reviewer who said the singer was out of tune on "A Taste of Honey," I have no idea what s/he's referring to. That song is one of my favorites on the album - a great interpretation of a great song with the singer in perfect form. Also, if you like this album you should check out Captain Black Big Band by Orrin Evans - another great big band album.

So rarely does a great new big band album hit the shelves, I was thrilled to see this from Chris McBride... I too am surprised at some of the reviews here..Really useless stuff...I'm at a loss....Christian McBrides Infectiously charming personality shines right into his music...The second I played this CD I was instantly happy! The band is great. With top notch players...The arrangements were astounding and it was his first attempt at big band arranging!!!! If you are a big band fan I highly recommend this wonderful CD...

This is on CD that could not pass up. The performances are world class and the composition, solo work and high energy of the players make it truly a "good feeling" experience.

The is a sure to become a "collector's" item in the future. There are less and less venues presenting jazz at this level as the general market for art changes over time.

I recommend this highly for anyone who appreciates the best of jazz in an easy to digest, excellently produced and executed musical tour de force.

I hear something new every time I listen to this CD. And best of all, it is a great point of reference for anyone looking to understand what great bass playing is all about.

Hard to believe this is Mr. McBride's first foray into leading and writing for big band. Jubilant, swinging and fun. Mr.McBride has been onE of the best known mainstream jazz bassists for years, having worked with everyone from Sting to Chick Corea and everyone in-between. On his last release, Kind Of Brown, he came back to straight ahead jazz with a vengeance, accompanied by a crackerjack band band, Inside Straight . Now, he triumphs again with The Good Feeling. with dynamic charts. Can't go wrong with This one.

After entering the 2010's as vibrant and successful as ever after the online
release of his live online album classic Live At The Village Vanguard, Christian
McBride surprised a few critics and listeners when he presented this ambitious
big band album that not only became a Top Ten hit on the jazz charts, but put
a long-awaited spin on his music career. Although not new to big band music,
McBride handles The Good Feeling with excellent skill, superlative world class
arrangements, vibrant swinging solos and outstanding musicianship in a style
of it's own. Featuring an all-star ensemble including multi-reeds players Steve
Wilson and Ron Blake, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, trombonist Steve Davis as
well as vocalist Melissa Walker, it serves up a combination of original (old and
new) compositions. They include Shake `N' Bake, Brother Mister, an epic take
on Science Fiction, Bluesin' In Alphabet City (he performed it in 1994 when he
was in the Lincoln Center Jazz Festival) and In A Hurry, as well as slick takes
on classic standards like Broadway, When I Fall In Love, I Should Care and A
Taste Of Honey. A Grammy Award winner for Best Large Ensemble album of
2011, The Good Feeling delivers a kind of big band originality which truly rank
as one of the great timeless landmark albums by this wonderful jazz celebrity.

Note: Yes, he did release a highly acclaimed live online album in 2010, which he
recorded at The Village Vanguard and released that same year, and if you want to
download it or hear it, make sure you go to the websites of The Village Vanguard
and WBGO Radio or Jazz At Lincoln Center.

Three and a half, really... Christian McBride leads a great band (reminded me a lot of the Clayton-Hamilton Band in sound and quality of the ensembles, as well as the parade of excellent soloists). So why no rave review? Well, I really like every classic track on the album (except for the vocals), and I really don't like every more contemporary track on the album. To me, the two worlds rarely mix well. And I'm a traditionalist at heart, so... But add at least a star if you enjoy modern big band numbers as much as the more classical Basie/Gillespie/Quincy Jones style.
Also, the vocalist is terrible. Really terrible. I skipped each vocal number after a minute or so. With so many good to great singers out there, I can't understand why they went for this one. A Taste Of Honey (a terrible tune anyway) is simply unlistenable.
