Best book on business I've read! It does not tell how to do things, but the things that need to happen in order go from good to great!

Good book, I'm not a reader usually but the book sparked interest. At a quick glance it looks business related but the steps to go from good to great can be applied to ordinary lifestyles to make the person great.

All of Jim Collin’s five principles are very simple and easy to understand. It is a good read to learn management know-how.
I found this book is most suited for people who are currently in top management positions as some of his techniques such as to have right people in a bus are hard to apply when you are not in a top or senior management position. Typically, these type of HR related decisions can be made only by top management.
Having said that, there are a lot of techniques I can implement in everyday life. His team’s real examples support his principles and there is nothing we can argue about them. This book will change your way of looking at companies.

Jim Collins does a great job at introducing and elaborating different business concepts that have lead to both successes and failures of different companies. There are companies that can be seen as foxes, ready to attack at any opportunity that is available without much analyzes. Then there are those companies that look at the bigger picture to realize complexity in their business is unnecessary and thus focusing on the essential qualities they need in order to progress. He defines the Hedgehog Concept that is a simple yet effective strategy to go from "good to great."
Collins also brings up the crucial idea of consistency in discipline. It is not about creating a "to do" list, but rather to create a "stop doing" list. It will make life easier to first shun from the bad habits and then focus on qualities that need improvement.
The idea that technology is a necessity in order to improve a companies performance has been a misconception as he states in the book. The idea of Crawl, walk, run must be kept in mind to prevent any failures.

As for my review of Jim Collin’s: Good to Great. I found it to be a mix bag of being informative, captivating, and also questionable. This book was meant to introduce compelling notions on how to make good companies great, which should cater to people who seek improvements within their companies and novice business managers. Jim Collins accomplishes this by conducting comparative investigations on different companies and explaining to the reader what level of leadership is required to run a great company. The book covers this in further details in chapters 1 and 2. I did find this book more enjoyable after the introduction of the hedgehog concept, however Collins does not provide much evidence to back up the significance concept that is meant to assist companies’ transition from good to great. How is it that even great companies, such as Fannie Mae, Circuit City, and Wells Fargo, can still encounter setbacks or bankruptcy? I’m sure Collins covers this question in his succeeding book, How the Mighty Fall, but I felt as if I should have been given more from this book. It is still an easy and enjoyable read.
