It's impossible to remove all the zest from the back of the grater. I'm not talking about washing it
Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2020Style Name: Etched ZesterVerified Purchase
My daughter wanted a grater. I purchased this one based on a great review from Cook's Country. I already own a Microplane. This morning I tested both of them using lemon rind. The Microplane won. When you grate citrus zest, a good deal of it sticks to the underside. It is easily swept out using a pastry brush, as long as there is a way for it to exit the grater. The Microplane is open at the bottom end of the grater so the zest sweeps right out. The Oxo Good Grips Zester and Grater lacks this minor but apparently important feature. It is closed at both ends. You can bang the Oxo Grater until the cows come home, but the zest stays on the grater. Use your finger, a brush, or whatever on the Microplane and the zest is yours to use.
The first photo shows the amt. grated from each tool, and the brush used to sweep off the zest from the back of each grater. The second photo shows the amt. left on the Microplane after brushing & cleaning with a finger tip. The third photo shows the same treatment on the Oxo. I do believe I will keep my Microplane and my daughter will get the Oxo. Oxo makes *fabulous* products and I became believer when I purchased an Oxo potato peeler years and years ago. This product must have been made in mind of those folks who don't scrape the batter out of their mixing bowls with a rubber spatula. :-)

Here’s some positives:
I used to just mince garlic with a chef knife and it’s something I hated doing. But, with this grater I love how I can get the garlic down to a fine spread very easily (see pictures). It distributes taste so much better when adding it to your cooking.
I also love how when you grate the garlic, it sticks to the underside of the grater. If you flip it over you’ll find that the garlic is still attached to the underside. Then you scoop the garlic out with your fingers or with a spoon.
The grater fits nicely over a bowl, or if you just wanted to grate over a cutting board that works perfect too. It provides plenty of grip so it’s not sliding around at all, and it’s ergonomically easy to hold.
I’ve also used this to zest lemons and it works amazingly for this purpose. Huge difference in taste for cooking!
The grate is very sharp so it does the job well. And it’s very easy to clean. I thought pieces of food would get stuck in the little holes but they don’t. Just be sure that when washing you run your sponge/scrubber in the upwards direction over the grater, because if you run it downwards you’re essentially grating your sponge!
The downside: I will warn you though that if you’re grating something slippery and small like garlic cloves and you get down to the last small bit of the clove, it becomes really difficult to grate that last bit without grating your fingers. For this I use the non-sharp edge of a knife to push that last bit of clove over the grating. Or if you don’t care you just throw out the last bits. Maybe the bottom of a fork would work good for this too. My fingers have slipped once already while grating slippery garlic and my thumb knuckle hit down on the sharp grating, resulting in a cut. It’s not a deal breaker for me, because it was a rookie mistake, and it’s just something you have to be careful with. Once you learn the tool, you’ll know your safety limits. If you’re on the clumsy side when it comes to things like this I would go for one of those graters that kind of do it all for you.
Overall, you’re getting a great product. Good luck!

This is by far the best and easiest to use zester I’ve ever owned. There is a large zesting surface (but not so large that it’s too big for the fruit). A very light pull will give you longish tiny ribbons of zest with no pith at all—and the zest falls easily to the plate or board under it. There’s no messy scraping the inside of your box grater, or losing half of the zest on the grater. VERY easy to clean and it comes with a cover to help keep it sharp, keep it from being bent in the drawer and keep your hands from getting rasped every time you pick up anything from that drawer. Thoroughly satisfied. I’m even thinking of getting another to guard against the time Oxo stops making these!

I have purchased several zesters over the years and this one is #1 hands down. Super sturdy, perfect handle and balance for zesting or grating anything.
I have had it less than a week and used it at least 6 times! Easy to clean and the protective cover is amazing. Buy this one, you won’t regret it.

Considering the size of this tool, I expected it would be useful when I needed a small about of grated parmesan. Perhaps for individual needs over a single plate of pasta. I was wrong. I haven't used my box grater since this came into my house. I am impressed with how quickly this can produce a full cup of fluffy grated parmesan at the perfect texture. Its near mirror finish makes cleanup surprisingly quick and easy, and I particularly like the snap-on plastic shield that protects those incredibly sharp cutters.
With parmesan, the close you get to the rind, the harder the cheese gets also the more concentrated the flavor gets. With other graters, I normally saved the hardest part and tossed them in my sauces. This new grated even handles the toughest cheese right up next to the rind. Speaking of this, I encourage you to be very careful with this tool. Over the years, I have grated my fingers on any number of old box or handheld graters with very little damage to my digits. I am pretty sure this tool would make salad out of any finger that was offered to it. Be Careful!

I use this for zesting citrus and grinding nutmeg. It does a good job for both. It does seem to be a little shallower than my old microplane; it doesn't dig as far into the lemon as the old one did and just skims the surface, which I found a little off-putting at first, but maybe it's for the best. That way there is less pith in with the zest.

I love everything about this tool! Got another one that was well reviews, but super dull. This one grated ginger/lemon rind/garlic so easily! And it’s easy to lay it flat over a plate and just grate down - no sliding around! Easy to clean too.
